Flying in early pregancy

We're going to Ireland tomorrow on holidays. I am about 7 weeks pregnant. I have had spotting all the way along and had an early scan last week which confirmed that all seemed okay and that spotting was unexplained. I have had slightly heavier bleed today - still not bright red and not as much as a period but a redder shade of brown and more than a bleed.

I don't know whether I should fly tomorrow. I wouldn't have hesitated except that a friend of mine had IVF and a high risk pregnancy and her consultant told her she shouldn't fly at all in pregnancy. Anyone know why he might have said that?

Possibly because if she had a high risk pregnancy then the chances of her needing medical attention would be higher? Being in a plane generally means you are not able to just call an ambulance or go to hospital - you have to wait til it's landed.

What has your doctor/midwife said?

It may have been her health rather than the pregnancy or a condition exacerbated by pregnancy.

If you are worried then maybe better for your peace of mind to stay at home. Personally I flew up til 7 months and would have flown later if needed.

There is another recent thread on here about this. There is no risk to pregnancy from flying.

I flew loads in my last pregnancy but didn't have spotting then so I sense this pregnancy is more precarious. Also, my scan put me at 5+6 whereas my LMP date put me at 6+5 so I'm also worrying that the embryo is small for gestational dates.

I guess I should have called my doctor for peace of mind but I didn't think of it until now and we're flying early tomorrow.
