Static Growth but Won't Scan After 38 weeks?

So I had my 38 week check last Friday when I was 38+5. Midwife and student midwife measured me at 36cm which was the same as when I got measured at 36+5 so static growth.

Mw said shed refer me for a growth scan. Then remembered that within my PCT they won't scan after 38 weeks. So got to see a consultant tomorrow when I'll be 39+4! At first i wasn't worried but on Monday had my first experience of reduced movement and spent over an hour on the monitor cos it took aaaages for baby to start wriggling.

So now I'm worried and a bit concerned about what on earth they are going to do and what they can do at this appointment if they can't scan for growth? All they've got to go off is measurements that's have been taken by the community mw's. Hmm

Didn't want your post to go unanswered, although I have no real advice to offer - sport!

Just wanted to say it sounds like you've had a really hard time - I hope the consultant can offer some help tomorrow. Maybe the consultant has the power to over-ride on the scanning thing?

Anyway - hope you get some answers tomorrow - good luck Smile

I'd be really shocked if there was a blanket ban on scanning pregnant women post 38 weeks, the obstetrians just wouldn't be able to do their jobs properly. What it could be is that sonographers don't scan after 38 weeks because it's classed as a full term pregnancy, so referring you to a consultant will be so that they can both scan you and make a clinical judgement on how to proceed if any issues come up.

Good luck for tomorrow.

I would think that they'll scan you, I had scans at 40 and 40+7 to check the amount of fluid round the baby in 2 previous pregnancies.
Good luck!

Having had lots of monitoring and scans for DD1 who was "small for dates" I know how stressfull it is.
My consultant decided to induce her at 39 weeks. She never gave him the chance and I went into labour the night before.
She was absolutely fine and 6lb2
(her sister was 6lb6, but didn't panic a totally different bunch of MWs)

Lots of luck and best wishes!

If they don't scan after 38 weeks how do they provide expectant management for women over 42w? I wonder if the MW was mistaken.

How'd it go?

Hi - glad to hear you got referred to a consultant because they can make decisions and probably authorise further tests if needed, which a sonographer/midwife scanning you can't. I was told my baby had accelerated growth, they were concerned - saw a midwife who (a) scanned me herself and told me the midwife tape measure was never accurate as each did it differently and (b) her scan showed a big baby but not accelerated growth like the sonographer had worried about. I found seeing a consultant reassured me - so hope your consultant can do that too for you.

flisspaps after my mw appt on friday she gave menthes pink card which was like a request form for a scan and why it was needed. Then in Monday when I was in hospital for monitoring a different midwife binned it saying 'you won't need that cos they won't scan you' at that point I was beyond caring.

Anyway. After much hanging around today it just ended up being a normal mw appointment but at the hospital (urine, hr, bp, fundal height) then a dr came in to double check fundal height. She had a big more of a poke n a prod and agreed yes it's only 36cm but I'm not concerned on your merry way!

So alls well that ends well. Could just have done without the week of worry and questions spinning round in my head

Ah Mellie - how annoying being left to worry all week and then just sent on your way!

Hope you get to meet your little one soon and they're a nice healthy weight - good luck Smile
