I'm only in the early stages of pregnancy but I'm intrigued to know when you lovely ladies started wearing maternity clothes? Just to give me an idea?!
Thanks!!!

I never did. Just chose my normal clothes carefully.

starlight36 · 08/02/2012 21:11

I bought them for work when I couldn't fit into my usual outfits anymore. I think that this was around five months.

PrincessMango · 08/02/2012 21:15

Just bought a few bits now, and I'm 20 weeks. My bump seems to have appeared from nowhere! Before now I wore my normal clothes. Must say, its nice to mow look pregnant, not just fat!

Depends when and how your bump comes.

Congratulations.

Enfyshedd · 08/02/2012 21:16

I managed to get away with (most of) my normal clothes up to about 18 weeks. Then I realised that I was having to undo the buttons to be comfortable when lounging on the sofa, so I caved and got a pair of maternity jeans and had a pair of trousers for work from my mum (xmas pressie). Apart from a few bargains in the sales, I'm trying to stick to non-maternity long body length tops as I don't want to waste money on stuff for me.

ZhenThereWereTwo · 08/02/2012 21:16

5 months with DC1, 10 weeks for trousers with DC2 but 5 months for tops

MillyStar · 08/02/2012 21:19

I started wearing maternity trousers at about 20 weeks, I'm a tramp I've only bought 3pairs so the washer is on constantly lol

The only other thing I've bought it huge knickers because I like them over the bump and my others kept rolling under it lol proper granny massive ones!!

My tops have all been fine and will be till the end, I'm 31 weeks now x

InmaculadaConcepcion · 08/02/2012 21:45

Apart from underwear and one maternity dress I picked up for £2 in a charity shop, I just adapted "normal" clothes. Tie-front cardigans, tops and dresses gathered under the bust, wrap dresses (great for breast feeding too!) and second-hand long skirts a couple of sizes larger than usual.

A lot of maternity clothing is overpriced IMO and it's quite easy to find other clothes that will work just as well at a fraction of the cost. Especially if you're only going to need them for a couple of months!

I think I started feeling the need for looser clothes from about four months.

Have fun shopping!

I got maternity jeans at 8 weeks as I had major water retention! Havnt got any tops though just just a few normal bits one size up! Think I may wear maternity jeans ever winter though love having the extra material on my belly - so cosy Smile

missingmymarbles · 09/02/2012 00:04

first time round not til about 22 weeks and only lower half stuff. this time round, i've been in joggers since 12 weeks and have succumbed to maternity trousers this week at 17 weeks because i was so uncomfortable. i bought a pair new because i couldn't wait any longer for the ones i bought off ebay to arrive Grin

Alligatorpie · 09/02/2012 04:02

First time was 5 months, but even then I wore a lot if regular clothes in larger sizes, all the way to the end - I had a lot if belly bands and she was a winter baby so I did lots of layering.
This time, I bought mat jeans at 9 weeks!

Grumpla · 09/02/2012 04:09

Maternity jeans by 10-12 weeks both times.

I definitely got away with more non-maternity clothes last time as it was spring / summer so wore lots of tunic tops, jersey dresses etc. this time round have needed more in the way of jumpers, plus bought some proper maternity vests to layer under stuff as non-mat vests were leaving a chilly gap!

Now I'm 37 weeks I do wish id got a couple more nice tops as the non-maternity ones I wore happily until about 35 weeks have just got too small but it's way too late to be buying more so I'll just manage with what I can still squeeze into!

I'd definitely look on eBay for maternity clothes in bundles, way cheaper and you can pick out what you like and resell the rest. For the price of a couple of new items you'll get a full wardrobe and most of it will only have been worn for a few months so usually the condition is great.

melliebobs · 09/02/2012 11:07

i had to get a pair of maternity jean from about 25 weeks but just wore my normal tops/hoodies/t shirts. I also lived in my yoga/gym pants cos they are comfy. Now i'm on maternity leave i stocked up on 3 maternity tops that was at about week 34 and a couple more pair of lounge/track pants. I just need comfy rather than anything else. And personally I find that like with wedding stuff, add the word 'maternity' to anything and the price quadruples and for alot of it it aint worth it

DeeBeee · 09/02/2012 11:57

I started wearing maternity trousers quite early, by 12 weeks I think, as my buttons wouldn't close and I had visions of finding myself with my trousers around my ankles as I walked around the office. But as others have said, there are plenty of non-maternity tops that will do the job for the first 4-5 months. And for knickers, I really like the ones from Gap in a larger size than I normally wear, super comfy

justlemonade · 09/02/2012 12:29

The first time I needed maternity trousers fro around 18 weeks, but the second time from around 8 weeks! You can get away with normal tops for much longer.

NinkyNonker · 09/02/2012 12:43

With my first, probably around 20 weeks, mainly bought work stuff.

This time, I needed maternity jeans from about 12, 13 weeks. I can still use some larger, stretchy non maternity t shirts but that's about it.

Depends on your shape. With dd I puffed out all over so could get away with just bigger clothes, whereas this time I am all out front and not much elsewhere, so I need the actual shape of mat clothes.

buonasera · 09/02/2012 13:51

Maternity jeans by 13 weeks - I'm having twins though. Managed with my work trousers for another couple of weeks but then that was it and at 26 and a bit weeks I've now grown out of those nice Gap and Topshop non-stretchy maternity tops that I bought at 13 weeks... like MillyStar I'm getting along with the bare minimum (last time I was at the midwife appt she complained that I always wore tops that made it hard to get the BP cuff on... I explained that that's because I work from home so I'm always wearing my weekend top, yes, I have one of them!)

I sort of wish i'd got granny pants, I wear the low rise shorts type and it reassures me that they basically still fit (i.e. my behind's essentially stayed the same size, and maybe one day everything else will scale back to be in proportion) but having said that... um... sometimes they fall down on the walk home from the train station. I don't wear skirts so not a major embarassment, but STILL.
