Cot mattress - advice please!

I have just purchased a second hand cot off of Ebay and want to buy a new mattress (obvs). I know that foam isn't recommended as it could be a factor in cot death. Beyond that I have seen sprung, pocket sprung, wool, coir, anti-allergy and combinations of all of these together. Plus waterproof covers. HELP! Can anyone tell me what they think a good mattress is made from, or what the differences are?

Never heard of foam being a factor in cot death. I think ours was foam - both children still alive! It was waterproof with a removable washable cover. Was from babies r us.

Bought one from mothercare for around £60-70 three years ago I think, sprung with one side waterproof and lots of ventilation holes in it. No idea what the latest fad is for must have but would say go to the shops have a look at what you can afford for your budget. They all have to pass safety regs.

Thank you, maybe I got that wrong about foam? Maybe it was just second hand foam? Good idea, think I will go and look at cost, I bet some are really expensive.

i think i went for a middle ranging spring one with a washable waterproof material cover. About £70 on Kiddicare, Baby Weavers, very happy with it 2 years on.

We had a foam mattress with a waterproof cover, from Mothercare i think, for about £70. very happy with it, and have no idea what i'd do without the waterproof cover!

Thank you, so far then I think a waterproof cover is a 'must'. I have to say I imagine things could get very icky and stinky without one Grin
