uurrrggggh yuck.
I have already taken the full dose of antacid tablets - they say 7 in 24 hours for pregnant women. I am still suffering. Any tips?

How many weeks are you?

KatAndKit · 06/02/2012 18:56

30, almost 31. I've had this for weeks now but it has suddenly got twice as bad over the last few days.

I had been taking tablets and found them not doing a thing. Recently discovered gaviscon (pepper mint flavour) and it has been a lifesaver. It even says on bottle safe to take in pregnancy and I don't think there is a limit on how much you can have either. Some people also say milk helps but it didn't with me.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 06/02/2012 20:35

Ice cream? Cools the burning for a bit, anyway. Also, weirdly, Love Hearts.

KatAndKit · 06/02/2012 20:36

Right i will try necking the liquid stuff then. The tablets were handy for keeping in pocket and having by the bedside but I could eat seven of them at once and then still be suffering again a few hours later.

I had heard that about the milk and tried it, and it does ease the burn while you are drinking it but ultimately, adding food and drink just causes your stomach to produce even more acid so no good for night time. however the advice not to have any food a couple of hours before bed is never going to work for me because I am permanently hungry and get tired early.

DP has now gone out for the gaviscon bottle - lets hope I get a better sleep tonight.

Bizzarely, the fruit flavour tablets from Asda taste just like Love Hearts!!

Go to the docs and ask to for Omeprazole if you can't cope

I'm on repeat prescription for it because I've got gallstones and I honestly couldn't have coped without it

I ran out one weekend and had 12 sachets of gavisgon in a day and it didnt touch the sides I was in floods of tears ;( ended up going to my mums friend whos husband is on them!

They're safe in pregnancy I'm 30+4 and I've been on them since day 1, saw my baby girl at 3D scan last week and she's perfect x

KatAndKit · 06/02/2012 20:41

Thanks millystar I've got an appointment coming up anyway so I will definitely ask.

I second the omeprazole. I've actually been on them for years for acid reflux, and they're still effective during my pregnancy.

almondfinger · 06/02/2012 21:10

Before you start taking the hard core stuff try a half teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a small glass of water. It tastes rank but works wonders.

OooohShiny · 06/02/2012 21:11

I'm having similar problems - I was told by y GP to come off omeprazole (I've been on them for a year for a hiatus hernia and reflux) and after complaining that I couldn't cope without them they gave me Gastrocoat and ranitidine. I'm taking all the gastrocoat and ranitidine I'm allowed and am still miserable...I've had reflux all day today and was up most of the night with it :(

MillyStar · 06/02/2012 21:14

Why have they made you come off Omeprazole?

My pregnancy is consultant led and they said they're fine, as did my GP and the pharmacist looks it up in their big magic book every time I put my prescription in!!

Acid reflux is horrendous I can't handle it an all!!

MillyStar · 06/02/2012 21:14

At all not an all lol I've been on mine way over a year!!

OooohShiny · 06/02/2012 21:15

I have no idea Milly....but I'm only 7 weeks and I can't bloody cope with it now let alone another 8 months of it!!! I have an early scan next week and an Ob Gyn appointment so I'll ask there and see what they say

MillyStar · 06/02/2012 21:27

I would I honestly don't know how you will cope if you've already been on them, I think you're immune to gavisgon etc once you've been on them!!

Emsgale · 06/02/2012 21:31

I neck gaviscon like no tomorrow heartburn makes me blimmin miserable at the moment!
Apparantly extra strong mints are very good too??
