Pregnant while breastfeeding?

Has anyone managed to conceive while breastfeeding? My DS is 8months old so only has one a day but does that cover me contraception-wise?? :)

I'd say that if DS is only having one BF a day then no you aren't covered contraception wise, I think you have to be feeding regularly and on demand including at least 2 night feeds for you to be infertile but even then it's not guaranteed. I'm sure someone with my info will be along shortly. Have your cycles returned?

I think what they say about not being able to is a bit of a myth, especially if you've reduced feed frequency. Many people tandem feed an older baby through their pgs - I got 6 months in but found it excruciating to continue feeding my DS. So yes, in anwser to your question - easily!

My periods come and go as they like but there have been a fair few since he was born! Well, that's good news cos I'm broody again but don't want to stop breastfeeding Just yet :o

Yup, I got pregnant whilst bfing several times a day.

Best of luck (and v impressed at you being broody with a 8 mo. Took me a bit longer to recover from no 1!)

breastfeeding as a contraceptive is only effective if your baby is feeding frequently, is under 6 months, and is ONLY having breastmilk, and your periods haven't returned.

some people will still fall pregnant despite this, just as some will fall pregnant while using any other form of contraception.

likewise, some people find that breastfeeding has a stronger effect on their fertility and are unable to conceive until they stop breastfeeding altogether,.

We had no problem, got pg twice whilst bfing (1st was a mc in the end though, 2nd is kicking me as I type this!), and am still bfing 2.4 yo once a day. Friend of ours started trying for DC2 at the same time as us, also still bfing, and still nothing, so she stopped bfing in October, and still no baby. So it's worth a try, if nothing else!

Well, no harm in trying Wink

Well, decided to try for another dc when DS2 was 9months and still breastfeeding multiple times a day, including several times in the night (we co-sleep). I was pregnant that very month. Unfortunately, a mid-tri loss (not connected to BF'ing).

I'm still BF'ing DS2, boob monster that he is, even though at 25 weeks pregnant there is virtually no milk to speak of (he's clearly very emotionally attached rather than it being simply a 'milk' thing). And, yes, latrist we had to come through a month or so where it was beyond excruiating for me! The pain when he latched - made me squeal every time, then I sat there with gritted teeth. Luckily, as I said, come through it now... I can see us going on to tandem (although he has started to sleep through recently so maybe he will self wean by the time this one arrives, who knows?)

I conceived when DS was 8 months. At the time I got pregnant he was still primarily BF (4/5 times a day) with one FF.
