Steroid injections at 32 weeks

I'm just over 32 weeks into my first pregnancy, and have been being monitored quite closely since the 20 week scan because the baby's a bit small (within normal range, but bumping along the bottom of the scale). The experts have satisfied themselves it's growing, and blood flow, fluid levels etc all look fine, so I'm not worried. But this morning the registrar suggested that I might want to consider steroid jabs to improve the baby's lung development in case it comes early.
I'm a little confused by this, partly as I've seen two different consultants before her, neither of whom mentioned it as an option, and partly because there doesn't seem to be any reason to think the baby's likely to be pre-term (and the steroids apparently only have an effect up to 34 weeks anyway, so it would have to be pretty imminent). There don't seem to be any side effects, so maybe I just go ahead and get the jabs anyway, but any thoughts?
