What the hell do you eat? Last time I was eating gf bourbon biscuits in the middle of the night, but ended up looking like an extra megalith from Stonehenge. I am craving savoury salty kinda things so dried apricots are just not cutting it.

Here's a list I made recently (snack ideas never seem to spring to mind when I'm hungry and it makes me slightly panic, so I made a list!)

Disclaimer - I'm not fully coeliac to my knowledge, I just react badly to lots of wheat, so some of the below mightn't be fully coelic-friendly

Toast (GF bread) or GF pasta & melted cheese
Coconut bars (Tesco, 35p, amazing-just pressed together dried coconut)
some kinds of crisps
Flapjack w/ GF oats, dried fruit etc
GF cake/biscuits (home made or store bought)
Fruit/dried fruit
Yoghurt/milk
sausage sandwich (GF saus's. Cold sausages keep in fridge for a bit)
eggs in various ways (boiled eggs keep in fridge for about a week for me as well)
smoothies
fresh soup pot things
lots of cheese
houmous & chopped cucumber/carrot
porridge w/ GF oats & fruit/honey

I've adapted some nice cake/biscuit recipes to be GF, and also have a GF bread recipe that I've tweaked until it's nice & like normal bread - am more than happy to pass them on, but they might be a bit sweet if you're more after savoury things Smile

Popcorn!

stripeyZ · 30/01/2012 18:09

I'm a coeliac too which I loath at the best of times but have found pregnancy to be especially difficult. The pregnancy has also resurrected my lactose intolerance just to complicate things.

On the go savoury options: GF pretzels from sainsurys have become a staple, along with M&S popcorn & prawn cocktail crisps. GF bread makes me want to vomit, as do GF crackers of any kind. Nuts & seeds have been ok but i found they give me indigestion.

I've still got MS at 31 weeks & often cant face cooking, so instant GF food:

Potato waffles & oven chips have been good with beans, egg, ham etc. I substitute waffles for toast. In fact potatoes of any kind have been a saviour. Rice obviously but went off it for months. I had some tiger tiger instant noodles today which were surprisingly good.

That's about it sadly! I can't face all the usual Quinoa, gram flour options so have really struggled too.

Do let me know what else you find :)

Thanks for the replies! I'm with you Stripey about the gf bread - goes stale in about 5seconds...

I also have been getting through a lot of waffles. I was trying to lay off the popcorn as I could easily eat a whole bag on one of my insomniac episodes but might rethink that.

Thanks for you list Pomtastic, I'm really after things that I can eat straight from the packet so will look out for the coconut bars and hope they don't give me cottonmouth...ffffffttt :p I would love your bread recipe (although, truth be told, I'm probably too lazy to make bread regularly).

Ooh, waffles... runs off to Tesco

GF bread:

  1. Mix 500g GF white bread flour, 1.5 tbs xanthan gum, 1.5 tsp instant active yeast, 1 tsp salt & 1 tsp sugar
  1. Rub in 25g softened butter (I pop it in the microwave for 15secs to help) & 2 tbs honey
  1. In separate bowl, whisk 1 egg with 175ml milk & 175ml hot water. Then add to flour etc & mix well
  1. Put in greased 1.5lb or 2lb loaf tin, cover & let rise in a warm-ish place for 2-3 hours.
  1. Cook in 190 deg oven for 35-40 mins.
  1. When just about cooled, cut into slices and put straight in the freezer! Then you can just take slices out as you need them & they stay soft & non-stale.

I've fiddled about with this recipe for months and (to me) it tastes just the same as non-GF bread.

stripeyZ, certain shop-made GF breads made me vomit too! There's a certain kind isn't there that just tastes of vinegar (in fact, the recipe above started life with an additional 2 tbs vinegar & 6 tbs oil - yuck yuck yuck.

I found that there seems to be 2 kinds of shop-made GF bread recipe -

  1. the vinegary kind, which are normally packed in little air-free 'bubbles', like this:
www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=260954924

and 2. a much nicer kind, which does taste much more 'normal', which are normally unsliced and called fresh, like this:
www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=267309434

Gosh, this is SO long, sorry - I just remember this being a really hard part of early pregnancy & I found things much easier once I knew the above!

stripeyZ · 31/01/2012 18:40

Not to long at all! could talk forever about the perils of GF, esp in pregnancy. It's so hard.

Thanks for the recipe, I'll definitely be giving it a try. Where do you get your yeast from? I've not had the unsliced bread so will give that a go too. I've more or less given up on GF bread as I font enjoy Amy of it. I even bought a bread maker especially in the hope it would help but it didn't. would do anything for a lovely crusty roll Sad

Packet food wise, sesame seed snaps & NAKD bars are pretty good options. I've also recently discovered tesco GF orange wafer bars, 85p for 5 & they are amazing! As are co-op triple choc biscuits. Grin

Sweet stuff is much easier though I find.

Pomtastic · 01/02/2012 08:05

Hi stripeyZ, I use Tesco's bog-standard fast action dried yeast:
www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=259108442

nothing fancy! I do get what you mean; I still (33+6) get 'morning' sickness even at the thought of some GF breads - I don't understand why they manufacture it with such yukky recipes when it can be nice!

stripeyZ · 01/02/2012 09:50

Thanks for that. Not sure if you realise but that yeast (as do most) contains wheat. Not sure if this would be a problem for you.

I'll keep up the search for a GF one Smile

Pomtastic · 01/02/2012 11:16

Oh poo, never realised Blush not so GF after all then!

stripeyZ · 01/02/2012 18:32

Happens to me all the time Smile

I discovered Allisons yeast today which is GF.
