I used a doula with my first, she was amazing. She kept me totally focused on my breathing and that's what I needed.
I think I will use a doula again this time, but I am moving at 36 weeks, so it may be hard to find someone.

Friends I know who have managed a planned home birth even for first, have all used Doulas which to me suggests that it must be very effective!

I've got a post natal doula, as for me, bringing the baby home is much more overwhelming than labour (ignorance is bliss, I guess :o)

I had one for first. A trainee and will book her for second. I had a natural birth without pain relief and without intervention. I had two birth partners inc doulas and they really helped. The doula gave the other confidence. The doula also supported midwife requests. I was exhausted by the time I had to push and doula and needed a lot of support. The midwife commented on how good she was . Trainees are cheaper. Mine was trainee but qualified soon after. Hope this helps.

I had a close friend helping me with breathing for DD1, but not for DD2. I felt completely focussed and in control with DD1, not at all with DD2. I'm getting another friend for next labour. If I didn't have a friend I could trust/wanted to help I would definitely use a doula.
