Losing weight when pregnant?

Ok... just found out I have a BFP - yay! I'm mid-thirties and about 3 stone overweight and tbh thought it would take us much longer to conceive so had planned to shift a bit of weight first. I keep reading things that say don't lose weight when pregnant but what if I just lose weight by eating a sensible healthy diet and cutting out the crap? In other words eating the diet I should be eating anyway and just losing weight by default?

I'm going to ask the midwife about this at my first appt but has anyone else been in this situation? And what did you do? I know the baby only has tiny nutritional needs calorie-wise in the first 12 weeks so if I could get 12lbs off now it might save me from varicose veins, backache etc later on...

Just don't overeat and you shouldn't put on excess weight.

I stuck to three meals two snacks and didn't put on anything

Best friend ate what she wanted and really ate for two and put on 3 stone HmmHmm

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

A good friend of mine gained about 4 stone with DC1. Got pg again within a year (she lost about 1.5 stone in that time) and got gestational diabetes. She ate very carefully and ended her second pregnancy the same weight as she started it. 6 months later she's kept the weight off and lost some more. Obviously don't starve yourself, and do take a multi vit. But baby will take what it needs, so upping the veg etc and cutting out the crap will do you both good.

The general advice is not to diet, but to eat sensibly. You shouldn't be going for weight loss, just a sensible gain at an appropriate weight, so you will be looking to gain less than you would if you had been lighter to begin with. Eat healthily and talk to your mw, don't do anything drastic.

Did you know that calorie-wise when pregnant you only need to eat the same as one additional banana a day!

I found (as have a lot of preggie friends) that I lost weight in the first trimester....then it starts to come back on and on and on and on!!

As long as you eat sensibly and don't use pregnancy as an excuse to eat a dozen Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in one sitting you'll be grand! (ooh - so tempting though!)

Please be careful trying to actively diet at the moment. Your baby is so important and a big change in your food intake can have a bigger impact than you might wish.

There's plenty of time to shed unwanted weight after bubs arrives - and hey if you feel up to breast feeding that'll definitely help you!

Xx

Of course this is probably all academic as I am madly craving sour sweets at the minute... Hmm
