5 weeks 3 days: Moderate bleeding and abdominal cramps but neck of womb still closed - anyone else had this and NOT gone on to miscarry??

Hello, I am v scared and am seeking reassurance that someone else has experience what I'm going through.

I am 5 wks 3 days PG and yesterday started with some bleeding down below. It started off as just a bit of rusty brown on the loo paper when I wiped, but got heavier to include some red blood too, as well as some mucousy looking stuff and some v small dark lumps (like half a grain of rice). I also have period-style cramps in my lower abdomen.

DH took me to the urgent care unit at our local hospital last night and I had a vaginal exam by the doctor there. He ruled out an ectopic pregnancy and told me that he could see the neck of the womb was still closed. He said this means there's a 50:50 chance of progressing to a full miscarriage and that I should just rest, and call my GP tomorrow (monday) for a referral to an Early Preg Unit - where they may be able to do an early scan at the end of the week, as I'll be 6 weeks PG by then.

So 50:50 isn't great odds, but I would really love to hear from any women who've had this experience and NOT gone on to miscarry, to reassure myself that it is still a possibility. There's more blood now than I would call just 'spotting' - i have had to put a sanitary towel in my knickers overnight. But it's still not as much blood as a period.

Gah - what does anyone think? I hate that this has happened over a weekend and I now just have to wait.

x

It is definitely possible as with my 1st and 3rd I experienced a quite copious bleed at between 5 and 6 weeks and continued with the pregnancies - however I did not experience any pain. I think pain may probably be more of an indicator of miscarriage than bleeding. I experienced both pain and bleeding (with clots) with my miscarriages at 6.5/7.5 weeks - it was like severe period pain. My EPU did a early scan before 6 weeks with my 3rd baby so get onto them 1st thing in the morning and plead your case! good luck.

I bled at 6, 9 and 11 weeks each time was as you described starting rusty brown then went to fresh blood with bits in with stomach ache. Each time i contacted my Early Pregnancy Unit who were a real support. I was scanned each time and found to be OK. I am now almost 30 weeks :) I was told it was possibly implantation bleeding and then at 11 weeks it was possibly around the time I would have had a period and this had caused some spotting.

Unfortunately it is very stressful especially over a weekend and feels very lonely. Rest as much as possible and get intouch with GP or EPU tomorrow xx I have everything crossed for u

I had bleeding & pain around that time with DD.

She's 2 & a half now.

McQueasy · 29/01/2012 14:15

How did they rule out ectopic pregnancy without scanning you?

PoultryInMotion · 29/01/2012 16:04

Hi DangerMousey my bleeding was pretty much identical to yours, rusty at first but getting heavier with mucus and clots. The bleeding lasted about 2 weeks and I'm pleased to say I didn't miscarry and am currently 32+3. I must say, I wish you all the luck in the world, but 50:50 may be about right. The waiting period is very hard I know x

DangerMousey · 29/01/2012 20:29

Hi McQueasy, the doctor in Urgent Care at the hospital did an internal exam by hand to rule out ectopic - he was moving the neck of the womb slightly and said that if it was ectopic i would feel acute pain on one side of my lower abdomen. I didn't, so he said he was happy it wasn't ectopic...Also, my pains are non-specific, not concentrated on either side.

PoultryinMotion and willowshimmer - thank you so much for your reassuring stories. Unfortunately, earlier this afternoon I did a Clear Blue pregnancy test which I had in the bathroom at home, and it said 'not pregnant' - whereas the same brand of test told me I was pregnant 10 days ago when i first POAS. So I have pretty much given up all hope of this story ending well now. Am still gonna ring GP tomorrow for a referral to the early pregnancy clinic, but feel pretty sure that if my levels of pg hormones have fallen low enough to register a negative result, then it's probably game over. Really gutted - was my first PG and a lovely honeymoon surprise :(

Oh, DangerMousey, haven't got any comforting experiences, just wanted to wish you the very best of luck. I do hope all is well.

PoultryInMotion · 29/01/2012 20:42

Oh DangerMousey I'm so sorry it doesn't look good does it? Theirs nothing I can say to make you feel better but I hope you're being kind to yourself, curl up and cuddle your DH lots x

MumofAurelia · 29/01/2012 20:48

Oh Hunni, I hope it will be ok and you had a dud test.
I bled and had pains at 5/6 weeks, DD is two now, it can happen.
Huge hugs

PotteringAlong · 29/01/2012 20:55

I had exactly the same. I am mumsnetting on my phone whilst BF my 8 week old son...

I hope all is ok for you.

PotteringAlong · 29/01/2012 20:56

Oh my, and that is why I should read the whole thread before posting. I'm sorry.

DangerMousey · 30/01/2012 14:57

Hey all, thanks so much for all your kind words and thoughts over the weekend.

Been to the early PG unit this morning and they have confirmed a miscarriage. Really gutted - having a couple of days off work with the DH to recover and have lots of cuddles.

Will be trying again soon so hope to see you all back on these threads in the not too distant future. D xxx

oh so sorry danger and a very big hug.

Really sorry to hear your sad news, I'd had my fingers crossed. Take care and be kind to yourself whilst you come to terms with what has happened - I was where you are in August and it really sucks, I know. I conceived again after two or three months and I'm now 16 weeks pregnant. I know lots of people who've had similar experiences - heartache followed quickly by a successful pregnancy. Very good luck to you for when you're ready to try again x
