When does 2nd trimester officially begin?

I've had a very stressful first trimester (mostly self-inflicted; I've just been terrified of miscarrying) and been just living and breathing for the big 12 weeks, thinking at that point I'd be able to relax a bit more.

I'm currently 12+5 but read a couple of weeks ago that actually the 2nd tri doesn't start til 13 and even 14 weeks! I know it's not a magical 'safety zone' that you tip over into overnight, but I'm just really looking forward to being able to say (mostly to myself) 'I'm in my second trimester'!

Does anybody know when this will really be?

I always worked on 14 weeks, because that was usually when I stopped throwing up enough to come out of hospital! Note the use of the past tense....

Hi Peas, I am with you on that one. Several miscarriages in the past and this pregnancy (currently just over 14 weeks has dragged by in a very slow haze of thumb twiddling, clock watching and symptom (or non-symptom) spotting. I found this brilliant Trimester Calculator online which tells you so much about the timeline of the pregnancy. Basically your second trimester 'by development' seems to begin at around 12 weeks but you are not officially in your second trimester until your 13th/14th. This will give you some actual dates to obsess over!

Haha, thanks so much freelance! 13 weeks today... Nice to hear somebody understand how the time drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrags. DP says it feels like yesterday when we found out - to me it feels like another lifetime - could be two years ago the way I feel! Good luck for the both of us for the rest of our pregnancies! x
