Itchy fanjo; scratching til I'm sore! Not sure it's thrush, but what can I DO?!

Am 30 weeks with DC2 and have managed to keep the itching at bay thus far by wiping any discharge away immediately, but that seems to have stopped working this week (in fact I'm not sure there's much discharge at all lately).
Sorry for tmi...
The result is that I'm itching like anything, and making myself sore with all the scratching (it's the only thing that offers any kind of relief, albeit short-lived!). It's not a good look either, and I have to remember not to do it in public!

I had the same thing last time and was told it's just the hormones changing the vaginal sensitivity but it's driving me mental, not to mention hurting my chuff!
Canesten eases the itch for an hour or so, but I'm having to lash it on. Has anyone else got any experience of it, or ideas as to what else I can try? Thanks!

I would try the canestan pessary. Don't use the applicator in pregnancy, just insert it yourself (that was the advice I was given). In the meantime you could try natural yoghurt or salt water bath to try and relieve soreness. Also I would avoid anything tight fitting and if possible go without knickers indoors! I wouldn't put too much canestan cream on - it strips all the good oils as well as the fungus.

I would mention to midwife or GP, especially if you're suffering more from itching than from discharge. It could be group B streptococcus, even if this wasn't diagnosed in your previous pregnancy. Best to get a confirmed diagnosis anyway, and if it is thrush you can have the cream and pessary on free prescription.

Thanks ladies! I'll go commando as much as poss (DS gives me disgusted looks whenever I get naked so that will annoy him - and he's not even 2!)
I'm seeing the mw next week so will mention it again - I did bring it up last time but she didn't really say much.
Yesterday I must have had a thorough wash down there about 5 times and that definitely helped, and I'll try the salt bath... Am I meant to eat the yoghurt though or spread it on my bits?!

on your bits.

Mw or gp can do a swab to tell you if it is thrush or not, then you can treat accordingly. They will probably test the swab for strep b too while they are at it.

Don't scratch!!!!

Oh gosh I feel your pain, I had terrible thrush for the last few weeks of pregnancy and had to be treated twice with pessary and cream before it cleared up. My advice is make sure you get it cleared up ASAP it cause real problems for me with protein in urine and midwife thinking I might have pre eclampsia etc ect was a real saga that lasted right up until labour...you have my sympathy it's really horrendous.

LaTristesse · 26/01/2012 15:13

Funny you should say that roz, she scared the crap out of me last time but insisting I get an urgent urine test sent to the lab for pre-eclampsia as there was protein in my pee - I'm guessing that explains it... Will go and get medicated today!
