Just eaten buffalo mozzerella

Been out for lunch, had mozzerella & tomato salad to start. Now realised it was buffalo mozzerella and it's recommended we don't eat that. Was only a few small slices and I know the likelihood of it being a problem is very small so am trying desperately not to freak out, especially as I can't do anything about it now! It's not exactly working though as I've been very paranoid this whole pregnancy after previous MC.

Just needed to share. Thanks. Am 32 weeks tomorrow by the way.

I thought mozzarella was okay so long as it's made from pasturised milk??

Has the guidance changed?

AThingInYourLife · 25/01/2012 18:53

I didn't even know buffalo mozzarella was one of the cheese-wahs.

The chances of you getting listeria pois

thisisyesterday · 25/01/2012 18:58

whhy can't you eat buffalo mozarella?

ShhhhhGoBackToSleep · 25/01/2012 19:08

Why wouldn't you be able to eat buffalo mozzarella? The only cheese you can't eat when pregnant is mould ripened soft cheese like Brie, or soft cheeses made from unpasturised milk. The mozzarella would have been made from pasteurised milk (unless you bought it from a tiny little trattoria in italy who made it from their own buffalo milk!!), so it would be fine, honestly.

Flisspaps · 25/01/2012 19:16

From the NHS Choices site:

Many other types of cheese are OK to eat, but make sure they're made from pasteurised milk. This includes cottage cheese, mozzarella, feta, cream cheese, paneer, ricotta, halloumi, goats' cheese and processed cheeses such as cheese spreads.

Stop worrying Grin

surfmama · 25/01/2012 19:17

oh zanzi... it is such a bore isn't it all this worry. I feel your pain on this one as was unknowingly pregnant in france in the early days and ate all sorts. Buffalo is quite often unpasturised but not always, where did you go? maybe you could ask them. the chances of getting listeria are really small even if it was unpasturised.

Zanzicat · 25/01/2012 19:19

Sorry phone battery died! From what I've read buffalo mozzerella is generally made from unpasturised milk, where as cows milk mozzerella is made from pasturised milk - happy to be corrected though, thanks all.

Surfmama - it's horrific, isn't it!?! Number one pregnancy symptom here is paranoia! It's annoying though as usually I eat anything and everything and have an iron clad stomach. Since getting pregnant however I've been much more delicate and am still suffering from MS.

In truth I know risks are small, it's just the paranoia working overtime.

I am sure you'll be fine.

surfmama · 25/01/2012 21:17

zanzi it is horrid. i also eat anything, pick my salad from the ground and wipe my carrots on my coat after pulling them, that's about it normally...have turned into a total fruit cake... please tell me i can eat a rare steak when bfeeding??!!! hope you are feeling less panicky, mine usually lasts about 2 days then seems to dissipate when some other ache pain or discharge starts up! deep breaths...

JustMeAndMyBaby · 25/01/2012 21:18

Surf - Rare steak fine the minute you get that baby out!!

BikeRunSki · 25/01/2012 21:22

PG 1 - avoided everything I was told too.
PG 2 - Eating anything at all was such a major success, I didn't exclude anything I fancied and ate loads of feta and mozerella. Even stilton before bfp!

BikeRunSki · 25/01/2012 21:23

Both DC fine btw.

Flisspaps · 25/01/2012 21:57

surfmama Or if you are a bad parent like me, then rare steak whenever you feel like it, including before you get the baby out.

Zanzicat · 25/01/2012 22:24

Surf, like Fliss, I've been eating rare steaks anyway, although maybe not quite as bloody as I normally would. It's fine as long as the outside is properly sealed. And yes thanks, I'm much more calm. I distracted myself by trying to put the dressing back on the Moses basket after I washed it. It was worse than the bloody krypton factor!
