Is it safe to go skiing during pregnancy?

Does anyone know whether it's safe to ski during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy? Not definitely sure whether I'm pregnant yet but will potentially find out during skiing holiday next week. Have been TTC for a couple of years and have had a couple of miscarriages so don't want to do anything which could harm potential DS/DD. DH is sure it will be fine... Me... I'm not so confident! Any advice welcome.

it might be fine, the baby will be qiute well padded in there at that stage.

i wouldn't risk it though, especially with a history of miscarriage. spend the holiday in front of the fire in the chalet with hot choc's aplenty and a good book, go for sleigh rides etc.

I decided not to because I had had a miscarriage before and I didn't want to do anything that might potentially affect my pregnancy. I've had some quite bad falls when skiing like an idiot and you can never guarantee other people's capability on the slopes

I second patti that its other people that are the problem! Any chance you can test early? And then retest whilst you are out there?

If prior to 8 weeks maybe ok but I still wouldn't, any later and I def wouldn't risk it.

I ski-ed at 12 weeks and was fine. I have ski-ed with friends who were even more pregnant than that. Having said that, none of us had any pregnancy complications and were very competent skiers. We took it easy & avoided the beginner slopes where it is most crowded and the skiers/boarders tend to be less in control.

I would imagine that, a bit like riding horses, it's not the skiing that's the problem, it's the falling. Unfortunately you can't control the people around you, accidents, etc. so you might not want to take the risk...personally I rode to 23 weeks but it's a very individual decision.

Thanks guys. I guess if AF is late this month then in a couple of weeks I shall be in the chalet being waited on hand and foot whilst the others shoop away and crossing fingers for a 'third-time-lucky' xx

My colleague's wife did go skiing when she was pregnant, and their DD is now 6 months old. I am not a confident skier so personally I won't dare to do that. It depends how good and how confident you are. Grin

hi there, i was in the same predicament over Xmas. My GP told me that if I felt physically up to it, as long as I didnt push myself too much I should be fine. I ended up going and had a great time. If you do things slowly and with common sense, it shouldn't cause any harm. Obviously steer clear of busy or dangerous runs - anything that increases your risk of falling or being fallen into! Remember, in most cases, a miscarriage is an internal issue that is going to happen no matter what - skiing with caution is not going to bring one on. hope that helps.
