Swim attire when pregnant?

So I need some help making a decision as I don't know what's the done thing.

We will be going for a caravan week with the kids at Easter at about 34 weeks. I'll obviously be huge so I got a maternity swimming thing in the sale.

I've now unexpectedly got to go swimming on saturday at 22 weeks. I'm quite large already but not big enough for the maternity tankini thing.

Mentioned this to my mum and she claims it would be horrendous for me to go for a one of in a bikini. She thinks I should go and get something more appropriate but there so
expensive and cant do a eBay job as won't arrive in time.

So what do you guys think? Would I be a social outcast to go in a bikini with a very obvious baby bump. I don't seem to have got much bigger else where so I don't think it would be the end of the world. Or do I really need to go but something for one swim?

Thanks for any input :)

I wouldn't be comfortable myself - I'm going to be in turkey at my step sisters wedding when I'm 24 weeks as I'll be buying s tankini.

However I wouldn't judge someone else for wearing a bikini when pregnant.

I wore a bikini and thought (in a possibly deluded state) that I looked rather gorgeous!

I think pg women in bikinis look really nice.

AnaisB · 24/01/2012 20:22

I agree jasper. I guess it depends how comfortable you'll feel.

surreyhillsmumtobe · 24/01/2012 20:22

Have you tried your old normal swimming costume? I'm enormous at nearly 35 weeks but amazingly my old normal swimming costume stretches enough to be still quite decent!

Hmm I don't own a one piece. So my options are a maternity tankini which is too big or pre pregnancy bikinis.

I would feel more comfortable in the tankini but it doesn't fit. Maybe it's a toss up with comfortableness in a bikini and shelling out for something I will only wear once. I won't feel massively uncomfortable in a bikini just would prefer the tankini. I think it would be silly to buy one to wear once but my mother makes it sound like I have no option. so it's very reassuring to hear someone else has done it and not landed a life sentence

I have yet to buy a maternity tankini as not quite found the 'right' one! I have been wearing my old black bikini with a black mamas and papas vest top over the top. Does the job just fine at 30 weeks!

toddle · 24/01/2012 20:40

Moojie that's a brilliant idea. I have black bikini bottoms and a long stretchy Strappy top.

Do any of the life guards say anything as we have signs up saying only actual swim wear is permitted.

I'm 34 weeks and wore a bikini when we went swimming last week. Got a few looks on the last day as if to say "what's a pg woman doing here " but it never occurred to me to buy something for a 3day trip!

Anyway there were a few old blokes with bellies larger than mine wearing swimming trunks...and if pg women shouldn't wear bikinis then that should definitely be forbidden!

Keziahhopes · 24/01/2012 22:18

Toddle - if you turn up with a discreet top over the top you can always smile nicely at the lifeguards if challenged and say that the top provides discreet coverage!! As it is a one-off I doubt they will mind, as long as it is "safe" for swimming in, what they don't like are loose clothes that can caught on filters etc.

I'm 30 weeks and bought a cheap swimsuit in matalan for eight poung size 18 no tummy support. They had a matching tank and shorts too. It's what you feel comfy in that counts.

I wore bikinis when pregnant even though I wouldn't normally, was very pregnant on our last holiday abroad. Mainly felt happy that I looked pregnant not fat in it Grin I was 28 weeks.

Mind you, I also wore one on holiday around 16 weeks and thought I looked pregnant, but I have seen the pics and I just look podgy.

Sannebanana · 24/01/2012 23:37

I'm 37 weeks and still swimming twice a week, still wearing a pre pregnancy bikini. I honestly don't feel uncomfortable at all, I think it's fine. Though I do like the vest top over the top idea :)
