Sudocream....To use or not to use??!!

Hi, just wondered what peoples opinions were on nappy changing, bums & barrier creams??!!... As an old school mum.. 1st dd now 9.. it was usual back then to use a generous slathering of sudocream after each nappy change.. I have read recently that it is not recommended now to do so & to only use a cream such as Bepanthen or Metanium if baby has some nappy rash other than that just make sure bum is clean & dry!! Opinions please? x

haven't had a baby yet, but I would use calendula on little bottoms.

boots petroleum jelly works fine i find. I use metanium if dd does actually have nappy rash. personally i hate the smell of sudocream but the concept is the same as petroleum jelly. It is essentially a barrier cream which hopefully will prevent and wee/poo irritating the skin. Waitrose bottom butter is lovely too but expensive for a small jar.

and then I would also go for something with calendula, like the weleda nappy change cream rather than sudo cream.

If no rash at all then no cream needed. I used sudocrem if they were a bit pink/sore, and Metanium was great for terrible nappy rash. Awful for staining clothes/carpets though.

I never ever use nappy cream ie I dont use a prevention method. I only use a cream to heal any nappy rash that happens. Never sudocreme unless thats all there is. metanium is my cure of choice.

I only use it if DS has nappy rash which isn't that often but then I also use metanium or a lovely Burts Bees sample I got free with a Boots magazine, although not sure why as Boots don't seem to stock it.

I use burts bees if and when there is a rash, never use cream as a preventative measure.

I also do not use baby powder but instead burts bees powder and only after a bath.

What's so bad about Sudocrem? I use it when DD's bum is sore, otherwise I use vaseline, which acts as a barrier and helps prevent nappy rash. I guess it depends on the baby. If they're prone to nappy rash a barrier is surely a good idea if it works, but if it makes no difference with your child then don't use it.

I didn't realise there was any problem with sudocrem. We do exactly as MoaningMinnie has said - sudocrem for mild pinkness as a barrier against further damage, metanium in more serious cases.

Sudocrem also great for helping grazes, skin rashes, anything really. I find it really useful.

It's just a personal choice, not anything "wrong" per se. I just choose not to use SLS or parabens on the children's skin.

thats interesting. because i noticed that boots have highlighted it warning: contains zinc oxide. which made me think twice. midwife said 'sure they wouldnt sell it if it was bad for them'. which is ridiculous thye used to sell heroin in shops not to mention cigarettes as healthly! i know titanium dioxide isused widely in vitamin tablets and tooth paste today and that causes cancer if taken internally!

zinc oxide applied topically is EXACTLY what you want to apply to mild nappy rash. It help heal the skin and dry up any weepy bits.

If boots have highlighted it, it is as a selling point, not a warning.

I bougth a jar of Sudocrem when my son was born 2,5 years ago. I still have half of it left. Not because it wouldn't be good, but it cures the rash so quickly.

Another cream that I've used is Bepanthen.

I've only used sudocrem to clear up nappy rash, which it does really quickly. On a normal nappy change I'd not routinely use any cream, just wipe clean with wipes.

Sudocreme is the business. Also got the obligatory massive tub which is only half empty. It's as old school as they come!

Really annoying when toddler gets hold of it and smears all over everything difficult to get out of carpets though

I used it on pinkness that might become nappy rash, but the only time ds got real nappy rash it needed metanium to sort it out.

Rest of the time never needed any cream unless ds wore consecutive disposables - he was always fine in washables. (other babies I knew were the other way round, though)
