Hi, I am 20 weeks with DC2 and considering 4d scan between 28 and 32 weeks. Reasons are:
Had more scans with DS, and haven't seen this baby as much(didn't have 4d with DS).
Would like to have it as a record to look back on.

My reservations are:
We don't want to know the sex (do you know if you are bound to see on a 4d?)
I don't really want to see what the baby looks like before it's born, cos I don't want to spoil the surprise ! So this reason makes me think maybe don't do it, but I can't stop thinking I might regret not doing it. Think I might be a bit of a headcase !!!

Is there anything else to think about ? Thanks :)

We had one at 27 weeks and I'm glad we did because we were told the wrong sex at the 20 week scan. You've already said you don't want to know this so I think they cater for it by not letting you look at the screen as they look around, just because boy parts can be very obvious! We did get quite a clear picture of the baby's face and to be honest it was probably the most emotional I'd felt at a scan, whether or not he looks the same when he comes out I don't know, I'm not due for another 3 weeks. I'd definitely recommend one though Smile

We had one at 23 weeks (probably a bit early but first pg and v. excited). We didn't want to know the sex and it was fine - she said she'd stay away from that area to avoid inadvertedly letting it slip!

It was an amazing experience seeing DS (as it turned out but we didn't know at the time) move about, suck his thumb and smile. We got a really good look at his face and tbh he still looked quite similar at birth, so if you want your DC's appearnce to be a total suprise that might be something worth thinking about.

We got the disc with all the photos on (could get the film too but that was really expensive iirc) and can't wait to show him when he's older Smile.

I had it and am glad of the keepsake, but it is expensive if that's all you want. I wanted to check gender and for extra reassurance and "bonding" for my whole family. The kids were all awestruck especially when she moved and yawned. She didn't come out looking much like the scan pic though.

I am not doing it. I want to be surprised about the sex, and what s/he looks like. But I live in a country where you get scans at every appt, so I may end knowing even though I dont want to.
the pictures I have see have been amazingly accurate, I want there to be some surprise! My dd is almost six and she is very happy looking at her one scan picture and the one picture of me pg in her baby book. I will do the same for this one.

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 23/01/2012 04:06

We had one with dd and it was amazing. If I have read correctly you want to see tge baby but not tge sex or it's face Confused. If you don't want too good a look then just pay for a normal scan.

My dd looked different from the scan, remember they put more far on as they get older so the early you have it the less it will look like them when they pop out iyswim

I had one at 31 weeks cos we wanted to know the sex. Which they were able to show us very clearly. But they did ask us and it's something they could avoid if that's what we wanted. But you don't want to see the face? Cos that's what we were shown plenty if and at 31 weeks it was very clear and could make out loads of features. 4d scans are expensive we paid £85 for ours including the disc of images so for what you want from it it would be alot of a money. I'd just pay for a normal 2d one

MamaPizza · 23/01/2012 08:41

I had one at 28 weeks and it was amazing. We didn't find out the sex, the sonographer just stayed away from that area. Still a beautiful keepsake, so would highly recommend it.

I had one with ds at 26+5 days, and it was amazing Ds was moving all around yawning, then he had hicups, he was even cuddling up to me in the womb! It was just great, im having one done with this baby aswell hopefully at the same dates as there not too big then so they move around alot.
When ds was born he looked slightly different abit more filled out, but we had alot of photos of his face so I saw his features clearly its was nice being able to compare them when he was born didnt feel like i'd ruined the supprise at all.

justhayley · 23/01/2012 16:43

If you don't want to see the face at all I think a 4d would be a waste of money as thats mainly what they focus on. If u want an extra scan you could always get a normal 2d growth scan! I can't wait to get my 4d I'm terrible if the opportunity is there to see my baby clearly before birth I'm taking it - have never been very patient or good with surprises lol

smk84 · 23/01/2012 20:45

Thanks everyone, really useful to have your advice. Was thinking about a 2d scan, but here 4d costs £180 and 2d about £160 so not much in it. Glad to hear it's poss to not discover the sex.

Our 4D scan cost £70, that included a DVD of the whole scan (half hour), unlimited photos on CD and two colour prints. Have a look around, I am sure you can find it cheaper.

Macaroons · 24/01/2012 09:12

I would be tempted to have a 4D scan too. When would be the best time for one?

smk84 · 20/03/2012 22:02

Hi again, just to say having 4d scan on friday - decided we couldn't let the chance go by, and gonna take ds along - think he will really enjoy it. Macaroons I think they are recommended between 28 and 32 weeks for the best view :)

i would be so excited to have a 4d scan. can i just ask, as it's the topic. firstly can you have these scans say as early as BEFORE your 20 week normal scan which determines the sex? and if so would it be clear and would the babies face look quite filled out? weird questions i know but someone i know said they had one which was well before their 20 week and the pic she emailed looked like it was quite filled out
