Baby breathing?

This has happened a few times now, but I swear I can see her "breathe" in there sometimes. It's rhythmical, and varies a little between being every second to a bit less (so maybe 45-50 times a min).
It's not me...it's happening if I hold me breath...and not being able to stop my pulse readily and it being totally different rates I don't think it's anything to do with me, but, well, there's doubt.
I'm 39+6, but she still wriggles a lot...DH has witnessed it occasionally. Didn't happen that I could see when she was OP. But my girly's gone LOA again (phew) and it's happening again...on the left...it's such a nice feeling.
...could this be her practicing breathing?

Because of the increased blood flow to my stomach I could 'see' my heartbeat in various locations on the bump sometimes. Especially when slightly reclined in the bath. It was the pulsing of blood being pumped.

ShowOfHands · 17/01/2012 13:27

What I meant to say is it looked like strange breathing/pulsing type behaviour but was my heartbeat.

You're right that they practise breathing though btw but wouldn't imagine they could do it that fast. Not inhaling amniotic fluid. Who knows though?

This is what I was wondering, but it didn't matter what position I was in, or what my heart rate was doing, and it didn't happen whilst she was OP...and now she's wiggled a bit, it's stopped...and it was all up the left of my bump, where her back is. Humm...
Seeing the MW tomorrow, so might add it to me "curious stuff to ask" list...

Could be I suppose. But I couldn't see my hearbeat when dd or ds were op and that was because their hands/feet didn't exert the same pressure as their spines, less pressure on the tissue, veins etc between them and me and therefore not possible to see it. I could feel the blood flow to the placenta with my hand with dd too (anterior placenta) which was a strange, rhythmic pulse.

Isn't it the baby having hiccups? I get this a few times a day - like a pulse every 1-2 seconds, that sometimes seems to last for ages (20 mins or so). In my case it's to the right of centre of my bump, I guess where the back of the chest is at the moment.

Apparently babies do practice breathing and swallowing, and they then start hiccuping due to the fluid. Apparently it doesn't bother them at all. Same as you I find that it can stop (or at least pause) when baby has a good wiggle!

I'd be interested if your MW explains it as something else!

ShowOfHands · 17/01/2012 13:42

I found the difference between the weird pulsing I got and hiccups was both speed (hiccups much slower, every 1-2 seconds as you say) and hiccups were jerky, full baby body movements, the pulsating was a gentler sort of feeling.

I think they do all manner of strange things in there.

Oeisha · 19/01/2012 09:57

Def...not hiccups. She hiccups a lot, and seems to find it frustrating aso wiggles a lot. It's slower than the hiccups and I can feel her being jerked up and down with the hiccups. It's the up and down nature of it. It's not a 'sudden pulse' its def a more uniform 'in and out' IYSWIM.
I asked the MW I saw who's response was "babies don't breathe, there's no air in there"...yeeeaaaaahhhh! I'm not an idiot. I know they practice...but thought against berrating her for assuming I was a numpty as she was about to perform a sweep.
DH though her response was "typical MW" too as in "stop the hysterical mum asking odd questions" rather than seeing it as me being curious about what baby's doing.
I had a similar thing from a MW who was looking at a CTG with the UA/TOCO spiking regularly, telling me that the UA line isn't a measurement of when contractions/tightenings were happening...yet I spent 4 friggin days in hosptial earler in pregnancy because the very same make of CTG was showing regular contractions/BHs onthe UA line...I think she thought we thought it was labour, when we didn't...we just wanted to know for sure exactly what the CTG was measuring...(and that's the question we asked, she went straight to "those aren't relevant, it's not contractions/tightenings"). EH, seriously, I wish they'd LISTEN to the questions asked and not assume motive...sorry, ranted there, didn't I...

I had this last night! Totally came to the same conclusion as you in the wee hours. Felt like little breaths, was not my pulse and not hiccoughs...

It was def. "breathing". Born Tuesday, and her breathign rate is exactly this rhythm...when not yelling...
