Piss or waters? Help me tell the difference (not for the faint hearted...)

Right, 36 weeks with baby 3 here, and I've been leaking pee all pregnancy. I also have some fairly gloopy vagina snot. But I'm starting to worry that I'm leaking waters...

With babies 1 & 2, I ended up with no waters - they didn't 'go' at any point. Both times I was booked in to be induced after my post-dates appointment because a scan showed a lack of fluid around the baby. With baby 2, I was already in labour, and had to stay in hospital afterwards because I couldn't say when my waters had broken and they wanted to check her for infection (she was fine).

There's never been any explanation about where my waters go, which makes me worry that they're leaking. I keep sniffing my knickers, and I made my DH sniff my knickers (and who says romance is dead?) But all the sniffing is inconclusive... Any ideas?

Ring your midwife and get checked (sorry - dull/predictable answer Smile). I would have thought, that piss would smell....well....pissy iyswim and if there's not really any odour, then its more likely to be waters

Or discharge... I was wondering whether to give my midwife my knickers to sniff!

You need to get a sanitary pad in there! As far as I recall, the waters smell sweetish and piss smells...well, pissy.
I'd much rather take a pad for communal sniffing than my knickers Grin

I had just finished taking a shower when my waters broke so I really thought I'd wet myself. From what I recall, waters are clear and don't smell whereas wee does smell and is yellow. I remember the waters dribbling down my leg and continuing to do so as I walked into another room.

As others have said, ring your midwife to make sure.

Good luck with everything Grin

Maybe if you have emptied your bladder in the last hour or so and not sneezed, coughed, jumped, laughed etc and there is moisture it is more likely to be waters. I'd check with midwife. You can have reduced fluid without leaking waters. It can happen in the placenta is not functioning well. I had this. Get checked.

Waters feel a bit 'slippery', and clear. Smells sweetish.

phlossie · 15/01/2012 22:32

Thanks, ladies. This is gloopy. I think it's discharge + pee, but I will talk to the midwife.

Interesting bonzo - that's what I think they said about the other two about the placenta - I was 14 and 11 days over.

Watching this with interest. I have a similar thread in pregnancy, and I'm not sure either.

hmmmm pee does not always smell peey. i was having a mass vomiting session the other day and loads of well water came out there was so much i thought my waters had gone, more kept coming every time i retched.
it was clear and i got down on my hands an knees to smell it and it didnt smell like pee. i had peed before while being sick but only a little bit and had just been for a we so freaked out a little bit.
but it was just pee, clear unsmelly pee. who knew.

PickleSarnie · 16/01/2012 09:55

I couldn't tell either but waters smell sort of sweet. Whilst OH was sniffing my knickers, I filled up a sample bottle and it was really cloudy unlike wee.

Oh the glamour!
