Horrific cough at 34 weeks

Hello all..
I've had the most horrendous barking, honking cough for about a week now. Keeps me up all night, I'm managing about 3 hrs a night tops, and NOTHING I have tried seems to help. I'm on the hot honey and lemon drinks, I'm doing steam inhalations, drinking plenty, sleeping propped up and sucking sweets like theres no tomorrow. I've been to GP, who said its viral (as I suspected) and just have to ride it out, and seeing as I am allergic to codeine I can't even take the linctus. I'm wheezing a bit with it so Doc gave me a ventolin inhaler though not sure it does anything.
Does anyone have any more suggestions? Its really getting me down as I have severe SPD too, and the 2 combined are really making me feel quite low.
Thanks in advance x

I had this in my second pregnancy...I rode it out and it became infected, I ended up on antibiotics.

Currently 35 weeks and had a very chesty and wheezy cough since before Christmas. Two days ago woke up feeling rotten - bad headaches and ear ache. Went to the doctor...am back on antibiotics (penicillin - which is safe in pregnancy). Last night I had my first proper sleep in weeks and I have woken like a new woman!!! Cough is already getting better.

Basically wanted to say that just because it is viral now, it doesn't mean it won't change. Keep your fluids up and if your symptoms decline - get back to the GP. The antibiotics work so quickly - they may even prescribe them as a precaution.

You have my sympathy.

You poor soul.
I have had a cough since end November (so roughly 31 to 37 weeks) and the GP just smiled sympathetically and recommended honey. Like you I could barely sleep, but also could not eat as was sick from coughing. By Xmas I had twisted a rib coughing, losing weight, unable to complete sentences and was barely leaving the house, and still was advised fucking honey. It was only when a friend came to visit and was amazed by my condition that she rang her dad who was a respiratory consultant and he told me to get to hospital and start asking for some serious help.
My advice to you is:
yy sleeping sitting up- I found a feeding chair best
fgs do not strain a rib, that is agony
keep eating but note if cough is worse after eating and poss a kind of indigestion
ask for a simple linctus with no codeine
if really fucked, go to hospital and request blood tests, sputum tests, chest x ray- these may show up infection which a simple listening to your lungs does not. In my case, I finally finally got antibiotics and last night was the first night for weeks that I got four hours straight sleep.

I should also say, if necessary, just cave in and get tena lady pads, at least then you don't have to worry about the added indignity of pissing everywhere especially with your SPD (you poor poor sod).
