Finding out sex at 16 weeks

Hi all
Just wondered if anyone knew what the chances are of finding out the sex of our baby at an NHS 16-week growth scan?
I know that if you find out at 20 weeks, it's at the longer 30 minute scan - so do you think that during a growth scan they would say that they didn't have enough time?
Any opinions/experience welcome
Thanks!

NHS told me while I was having an amnio at 16+0.

Not all authorities will tell you

I dont know about time on the NHS, but I'm sure if you asked really nicely And the baby behaved, they'd have no problem looking.

We just had a 16wk scan at the fetal medicine.centre in London (early anomaly as risk of DS) and asked. The first doctor who did the scan was pretty certain it was a boy and it definitely looked that way. But then the chief Prof did another scan (baby had moved, so different angle) Nd he said it was a girl. So even if there is time and expertise, you cant know!!

Good luck.

We were told when we saw a new doctor at 18 weeks - confirmed at the 21 week morphology scan. The new doctor did ask us whether the old doctor had not told us already, as it is actually easier to see on the 12 week scan (we had IUI, so many more scans at the beginning). That said, we are having a baby boy and I think that is much easier to spot because you are looking for the addition of something (a penis) rather than the absence of something :)

It is definitely worth asking them - but it will depend on the positioning of your baby. Good luck!

We could see both our babies were girls at 16 weeks. But they did say to hold off shopping for clothes until after the 20 week scan just to be sure!

From experience there are certain hospitals who will not tell you. For not very pleasant reasons (think certain sectors of society aborting girls..). Luton and Dunstable and Watford General are two I know of. Probably best to check your hospital's policy first.

We were told at 13 weeks during the nuchal scan. Provisionally. Confirmed at 20 week scan.

I was told that dd was a girl at 14+6.

I just had a gender sscan at 16w and was told I am having a girl which I am delighted about as already have two boys - she did dpend ages checking to make sure and although she says she cant guarantee she said she was "pretty sure" - am worried now that maybe she got it wrong after hearing about people being told one thing and it turning out the other way - just have my heart set on a little girl.......

AlexTasha · 15/01/2012 11:32

I had a gender scan at 15 weeks and they told me i was having a boy, she said she was 100% sure, which was then confirmed at my 20 week scan. I think it is easier to tell with boys though...

InmaculadaConcepcion · 15/01/2012 14:26

I was thoroughly scanned at 17weeks for an amnio, but they still couldn't spot the gender.
The results of the amnio were definitive, though (girl - DH was delighted as that's what he'd been hoping for! I was just relieved all her chromosomes were normal).

I was told t my 16 week scan as we asked although sonographer said she couldnt see clearly enough to be so sure as would be on 20 week scan.

fredandginger · 17/01/2012 16:38

Saw that we are having a little boy, clear as day. Was very very surprised and how clear it was, and how it only took about 3 seconds!

I found out for definete at my 20week scan i was having a little boy, but i already knew it was a boy. It was just a feeling i got...and i was right!! I said something about waiting until birth to find out the sex being a surprise and someone very intelligently stole a comedians line and said well i will either be having a boy or a girl, what would suprise me was if i had kittens!! I didnt find it particularly funny. x
