Need reassurance - think I have food poisoning

Woke up this am feeling rather peculiar and have spent a large amount of time since on the loo (both ends - sorry if tmi). Think it may be the veggy burgers I made yesterday with egg - thought they were cooked ok but still a bit gooey in the middle.

I can cope with feeling like s**t, but my biggest worry is whether I could have seriously harmed my baby (I am 13+5 wks pg). Are the horror stories of blindness etc only when it's full-on salmonella, or could a morning of ickiness do the same thing? Please reassure me it's all going to be ok!!

Can you keep anything down? Drink plenty of water if you can. It could just be a bug but i would see a doctor to make sure. If its a bug or morning sickness then baby should be fine as long as you can keep some water down.

Idont know but this will bump you. Try not to worry and hope you feel better.

When I was about 12 weeks pregnant with DS, I had horrible food poisoning. He is now a lively 2 year old .

When it happened to me, I phoned up NHS Direct who said that as long as I could keep some water down (this took a little while), the baby would be fine. If I hadn't been able to for I think 24 hours they said I should go and see a doctor as I could have become dehydrated, which would have been bad.

Hoep you feel better soon, it is not nice.

I've had an apple and a glass of water which has stayed down so far. Cup of tea sent me running(!)

Definitely not morning sickness as I only felt nauseous up to about 11 weeks and have been fine since.

I will keep going with the water though. Don't like to bother with the dr until I think I won't be laughed out the place (not the best bedside manner...) - how long should I leave it if still unwell? A day? A few hours?

Straightforward, I had a really bad stomach upset when I was pregnant with DS3 - and he was fine.

mummytosteven · 16/01/2006 09:52

All sounds most unpleasant, but it's you rather than the baby that's going to suffer. Salmonella doesn't of itself harm a baby - but if salmonella made you very ill, then you being very ill could affect the baby iyswim. Speak to doctor or mw anyway for advice/reassurance. And try sipping some water/dioralyte so you don't get dehydrated.

PiccadillyCircus · 16/01/2006 09:52

Hope the apple and water stay in the right place .

I thought it was morning sickness coming back with mine, but when DH started throwing up as well, we knew it wasn't.

Straightforward · 16/01/2006 09:58

So is it the dehydration in the mother that can cause problems with the baby? What problems can it cause and how bad does the dehydration/poisoning have to be? Or does it depend on the source?

I had severe food poisoning (Campylobacter) when I was 7mths pg with DS2. I vomited 16 times in one day and had terrible diarrhoeah - nasty!!! I had antibiotics (erythromycin) to be on the safe side, and DS2 was fine, full-term etc. He does have some health problems but they have NOTHING whatever to do with the food poisoning. The placenta is a very good filter, try not to worry but try dioralyte and lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Just to update you - think the worst passed (ahem!) by about 11am, and I've just been feeling wiped out and generally cr*ppy since then. Have had odd little bits of food and so far so good. Thanks for all your support and advice xxx

Glad to hear you're over the worst!! REST!!!

Filyjonk · 16/01/2006 18:11

Just to add I too had bad food poisoning x2 when pg with dd, and she is fine, very healthy, don't worry

Meanoldmummy · 16/01/2006 18:12

It is miserable being ill when you're pg though... doesn't seem fair!

Aloha · 16/01/2006 18:14

Really, if you have food poisoning (much, much more likely to be a virus as salmonella in eggs has been almost completely eradicated) then don't worry. The kind of food poisoning that makes you sick is harmless to foetuses. It's the kind that gives you flu-like symptoms (listeria) that is a problem. The specialist pregnancy dietician I interviewed for a feature said that sickness was a great sign that nothign was wrong.

purpleduck · 30/09/2007 22:30

I had really terrible food poisoning when i was about 7 months pg, and my lo was/is fine. Took ages for me to really recover tho.
I'm sure it will all be fine

aikigypsy · 30/09/2007 22:46

I had some kind of food poisoning/motion/morning sickness at about 9 weeks, which meant vomiting 5 or 6 times over the course of two days. Was miserable, but baby seems to be fine (still in there at 34 weeks, scans all normal, etc.).

BunnyBaby · 01/10/2007 13:01

On Fridaynight I was sick 3 times and had diahorrea for 18 hours. Called doctor out who said it was gastroentiritis and wouldn't harm baby. The main worry as others have said is dehydration. I'm almost 32 weeks now, so if the diarhorrea had continued for a few more days, there woiuld have also been a risk that premature labour can be triggered. I'm sure you'' be fine

IdrisTheDragon · 01/10/2007 13:03

I had horrible food poisoning at about 12 weeks with DS. Was very yucky, but everyone was fine .
