6 weeks pregnant, how normal is cramping feeling?

I am 6 weeks + 5 according to my calculations; only found out on Wednesday and had first doctors appointment Thursday. This is my first pregnancy and was unplanned; but OH has been fantastic support so far and despite all the shock, nerves and massive amount of 'sorting out' we need to do (financially and otherwise) we are both pleased.

I am not letting myself get excited yet however as have not told anyone -we will tell parents soon but nobody else till 12 weeks.

Anyway, I am experiencing cramps and occasionally sharper kind of 'twinges' in my tummy and since I am completely clueless right now and have nobody to ask I am not sure if this is normal or something which I should have followed up. I don't want to be running to the doctor every 5 minutes if this is a regular part of early pregnancy.

Did anyone else have a similar experience early in their pregnancy or think I should go to my GP and ask for an early scan?

Thanks in advance :)

"Think once I have told parents and have someone close to home to chat to it will take a lot of the anxiety out of it for me"

I really would recommend telling somebody close to you. I'm currently 10 weeks pregnant with my first child and I'm sure I would have gone quite loopy without my best friend to be excited/terrified with. It really is a BIG thing to deal with on your own, and I've found having someone there to have a talk with makes it all a little less scary.

Biggest Congratulations

I have just found out Im pregnant - EDD 15/09/12 so VERY early days.
However, I have had a recent MC - after a BFP, 2 days later I bled and that was the end of that, so am very anxious about getting overly excited at this early stage.
I too am having period pain type cramps / stomach ache and am worrying about it (esp. after what happened) - its reasurring to know it sounds really common and should be nothing to worry about.
Have complete mixed emotions at the moment though - am soooooooooooo excited though dont want to get my hopes up - so tricky!!!!

farmerswifey and Franke, wanted to update you both that I told my mum this evening, was nerve-wracking but definitely has taken a weight off my mind having someone to chat to who has done it before me. BF has been great so far but obviously has no experience in the field!

Littlecherublegs I am sorry to hear about your MC, maybe if you talk to your GP about your concerns they will be able to put your mind at rest. Easy to worry about cramps under the circumstances but it is great to know its a common part of early pregnancy. All the best with everything :)

Hello this is my first post after reading up on some for a while you have aklll been a great help in my first pregnancy :-) I am 5 weeks and also suffer pretty nasty cramps pretty much any time of day or night. not worrying until there is blood though. What I wanted to share was that as a light sleeper the pain often wakes me up at night and found the sloution last night was to place one pillow under my pelvis it relieves the tension enough to sleep and also makes you feel a little bit cradled yourself i woke up happy for the first time in a fortnight :-). hope it helps!!!

Just throwing my experience in here too... I had horrible cramps at 6 weeks-ish, I didn't even know I was pregnant at that point so was hoping for a period to come pretty soon. So when it didn't, I did the test and hey-presto, you're going to be a mum! They carried on for a few weeks too which worried me (and I bled a bit) but all is fine, bump is 27 weeks and kicking like the monkey that she is. Congratulations and I hope your pregnancy goes nice and smooth xx

I had severe cramping with DS between 4- 8 weeks and fainting, they thought it might have been ectopic and had some scans and an admission in hospital. The pains were actually similar to established labour pains (I have since found out!). I had a surgical review but as the symptoms had not got any worse they sent me home (if it was ectopic I would have got ill very quickly). I am glad I did not have an operation as DS was born healthy 8 months later. We still don't know what it was. I am 6 weeks now and have only had mild cramping like period pains but not even that bad - phew!

I found a hot water bottle helped (not too hot), and I was allowed to take codeine and paracetamol which they gave me in hospital and sent me home with it.

The GP will not mind if you just get a check up, get a BP, temperature check and some advice, don't feel you are being a nuisance x

Champagneformyrealfriends · 12/03/2016 09:23

louisejane1711 this is an old thread but cramps (similar to when you're about to start your period) are completely normal. If they become excessively painful or you start bleeding then you need to contact your GP. I had the cramps for my entire first trimester.

I am 6 weeks tomorrow I found out a week ago yesterday. I have done another test this morning and it is showing I am further along than the test I did last week (clear blue digital) but I have cramps like I am about to come on and am really worrying I am going to miscarry. I have a fear of vomiting and after I found out and when I suspected I was feeling sick on and off all day and worse in the evenings. I don't want to jinx myself but I haven't felt sick really the last two days and my appetite is back. I am so worried this is a sign, but I did listen to Nevasic when I felt sick and on the fourth day is when it is supposedly most effective and since the fourth day of listening to it I have felt fine. Does anyone think I may have been thinking myself in to feeling sick? Or does a miscarriage sound likely? My mum and sisters and grandma/aunties never suffered with morning sickness or anything else really so maybe I am just taking after them? My boobs are still mega painful!

Harri xx
