Have you got any Olbas or Vicks?

Bunbaker · 04/01/2012 08:22

Nothing makes any difference anyway. Not what you wanted to hear, but I hope you feel better soon. Having a cold is horrible.

LoveInASnowyClimate · 04/01/2012 09:45

Oooh, didn't realise I could still use Olbas Oil, will get some. I know nothing really helps but I think I need some placebo effect to get me through the day! Thanks.

you can use nose spray (otriven and such) and ibuprofen in the second trimester.
but if you feel ill, a duvet day at home might be best anyway.

CuppaTeaJanice · 04/01/2012 09:47

If you get blocked, painful sinuses, you can use saline nasal spray - the sort they sell for newborns. Works instantly!

MrsHoarder · 04/01/2012 09:50

I got some pear drops to suck on between swigs of water for my poor throat. Other than that, yes to olbas oil and honey and lemon.

Rollersara · 04/01/2012 09:50

No, I asked the pharmacist yesterday, she said I had to see my GP. Saw my GP, she confirmed it's viral so it's paracetomol and honey and lemon. :( Lost my voice and have a lovely hacking cough this morning!

blackcatsdancing · 04/01/2012 09:54

Boots do a linctus that is perfectly safe for pregnant women, in the same range are throat pastilles. The linctus comes in 2 types, the one for dry coughs is blackcurrant and there is a lemon variety also. Didn't do much for me but was a great mental boost to be able to take something, especially as the cough dragged on for almost 3 weeks. Vicks inhalation was very good and advised by GP

celebmum · 04/01/2012 11:39

boot pharmacist told me that I could/you can take the basic hot lemon sachet things as all they contain is paracetemol and vitamin C.
not the fancy 'all in one' ones though as they contain other stuff.

hope you feel better soon x

Have you tried herbal or homoeopathic medicine? There are some alternative medicines that can be taken during pregnancy, you just need to find a specialist in that area. Is there a place like a neal's yard remedies or an organic pharmacy around where you live?
I had a nasty cold with just about the ugliest cough (sounded like I was a veteran smoker) and it really helped.

Magnumwhite · 04/01/2012 14:06

second homeopathic. also you could use humidifier to ease congestion at night?

BloooCowWonders · 04/01/2012 14:11

Head under a towel inhaling plain s team is the best thing you can do that'll actually make you feel better. But I do realise that it might not be an option if you're at work...

Oeisha · 04/01/2012 14:12

These guys...are brilliant at soothing a sore throat. If you can't have menthol (like me) they helped loads.

Oeisha · 04/01/2012 14:14

Oh, bloody typical. It doesn't work. They're "Green Bay Honeysuckers" Waitrose sells them. As do a few other places (but Wiatrose is wher eI got mine). Lets try this link.

CanandCon · 04/01/2012 18:56

Sorry to hear you are poorly.

I had a dreadful cough/cold for over a month. My doctor initially refused to give me anything for it, and my consultant agreed with his decision. Last week my DH insisted on coming to the GP with me. We saw a locum who properly assessed me, took my temperature, looked down my throat, ears etc. She noticed a difference in lung sounds and put me on a course of penicillin to prevent it progressing to bronchitis or pneumonia. I could have kissed her! I take my last tablet today and feel 100 times better. I am not suggesting this is the route you should take, or it will work for you, but please do insist on being examined thoroughly. BTW, I am 28 weeks pregnant with my 1st baby.

Good luck, and wish you better soon.

Thanks, everyone. I've got a doctors appointment for blood pressure later so might get them to check my chest. Am working at home and dosed up on paracetamol, lemon and honey and Olbas Oil so feeling a bit better.
