Is it really seriously forbidden during pregnancy or do they just recommend avoiding/not having too much and why? I am craving some really badly especially the salmon and tuna ones and want to eat it for my lunch. Please say yes!

Don't eat it.

mancmum · 13/01/2006 12:47

M+S is fully cooked so shold be OK - I ate it thru both my pregnancies

colditz · 13/01/2006 12:47

Think it is completely forbidden.

Saying that, I am sure Japanese women eat it.

skerriesmum · 13/01/2006 12:48

Why wouldn't you eat sushi once in awhile? If there's a warning it's to do with mercury levels in big fish like tuna... As long as you don't have it everyday I'm sure you're fine!

GhostofChristmasNatt · 13/01/2006 12:48

Fish worms

skerriesmum · 13/01/2006 12:49

M&S sushi is yuck though because they refrigerate the rice.

colditz · 13/01/2006 12:49

I think the problem with sushi is that it is made with rawe fish and rice, both of which are a food poisoning issue.

GhostofChristmasNatt · 13/01/2006 12:49

I think it's the worms

skerriesmum · 13/01/2006 12:50

If it's a good sushi place they're only going to use the best fish anyway... judgement call I guess, if it looks dodgy then don't.

littlemisspiggy · 13/01/2006 12:54

Right then I think I'll risk it. The make I'm thinking of is pretty fresh. I agree M& S sushi is pretty dodgy (too dry). Thanks for your replies.

My Dad (GP) says 'definitely no sushi' which is annoying 'cos I LOVE the stuff and ate it 2 or 3 times a week before pregnancy. But then he's not a fan of it for health reasons even in people who aren't pregnant (yup, because of the worms in the raw fish). I usually ignore him on this one but am being cautious...

As soon as this baby is born I'm sending my DH out for sushi! (And I'm going to have all the things that I can't keep down any more - tea, cheese, cucumber... Maybe a cup of tea with philly & cucumber sandwiches!)

PrincessPeaHead · 13/01/2006 14:38

I only eat vegetarian sushi when preg (keeps the cravings for sushi at bay if atleast you get the seaweedy wasabi bit!). Raw fish not great - mixture of mercury levels, fish worms, and the fact that you are essentially eating raw processed food that has been sitting around for a while. At least if it is vegetarian stuff you only have to deal with the third point, and you are slightly less likely to have food poisoning bugs growing on a bit of asparagus than yuo are on raw fish.

Apparently if the fish used for the Sushi has been frozen first (as most shop bought ones have been, and probably a lot of Sushi restraunts too) then it is meant to be fine. Freezing kills the worms. Will try and find a link.

here it is

littlemisspiggy · 13/01/2006 16:11

Becster, I thought Ghost was joking about the worms! Oh well it's too late now. Still licking my lips as we speak. I was quite restrained though and only had two bits of tuna and two bits of salmon - the rest was veggie.
