Could this be pre-eclampsia?

Just been to a New Years party (not drinking obviously!) and everyone commented on my ankles, which have been swollen for about a week now. Looks like I don't have ankles, just legs and then toes sticking out! Have also noticed in the past couple of days that my hands are swollen too, since my engagement ring which I'm sure was slipping off last week because it was too big now is actually quite tight.

Have also had a lot of pains in my ribs in the past couple of days and itchy feet, sometimes hands which I put down to wearing thick gloves and socks! And been feeling yuck which is probably a cold and seen blue lights in my vision at times.

Anyway, one woman there who I had never met before, seen my ankles and got me quite worried. She said to go to midwife (but don't have one at the moment as I'm moving doctor's) or to go to hospital. I had put it down to my weight (size 16) but she said she had never had swollen ankles or fingers like mine, and neither have many of her friends which are all bigger.

Has anyone had these symptoms and NOT had pre-eclampsia? Will ring NHS Wales in the morning for advice, but she has got me really worried now. It was always in the back of my mind but friends and family who I see regularly have told me it's ok.

Thanks for getting through this if you have! Just really worried and don't want to go back into hospital, having been in there a month ago with cervical erosion and supposed placenta previa (which have thankfully been told now was a load of tosh!)

Thanks LLL. Urine was fine, BP up a little again, but no swelling at all at the moment, MW was happy to see me next week, but made me promise I'd contact them if anything got worse.

I was sick "out of nowhere" about 2h ago. Thought it was indigestion at first. No epigastric pains, and dinner's just gone down ok. Not sure what to make of it. Don't feel any "worse" in terms of headache etc. Dont' feel sick now...

All's fine. DH got fed up with me asking what he thought, so took me over the road to the MWLU. BP's same as yesterday. Pass the wee test, so, rest, sleep, stop being so bloody curious etc...

I've felt the same, been being ill but it can return in the third trimester I've read/people have told me. Glad everything is ok with you, your DH seems to be v. supportive. Best thing for us both to do is rest our feet all night/weekend and make our men wait on us :D Take care of yourself and bubba! Let me know if anything happens but hopefully everything will be fine.

Thank you LLL. Supping a cuppa decaf now, which is making LO poke her foot out my side a lot, and will be sinking in to bed soon.

I'm 31+5 now, going on maternity leave at 33+6 and so looking forward to it! Should help with the swelling at least.

I had these symptom and it wasn't pre-eclampsia, I was so swollen that people would gasp and I couldn't wear any shoes.

It is very important that get it checked out and keep an eye on blood pressure. Luckily for me I live close to surgery so could just pop in without appt to get it checked.

oeisha the reason there is probably little concern is because the bp readings you gave are actually well within limits . Concerns arise when bp is 140/90 or more, or if your bp is a value of 15 higher than at your booking . So if your bp was 110/70 at booking, ideally it should not go over 125/85.
Generally though there is cause for concern if bp is or in excess of 140/90.
However with the symptoms you describe you should keep talking to your MW .

Nanny plum, her bp is 20 higher than her booking.

Are you still getting the itching? This could be a sign of obstretic cholestasis - basically where your liver stops functioning properly in late pregnancy (and the area of pain under the right ribs could be an inflamed liver).

I got this and was hospitalised at 35 weeks (they basically refused to let me go home after i went in to get my blood tested for this). I also had mild PE along with it.

The itching was worse at night and very very bad - got to the stage i was drawing blood from scratching so hard. OC usually comes on about 30 weeks along and I had been itching severly since about then (my midwife just told me to change my washing powder . . .) It was only when DH got home from work one day and told me i looked jaundiced that I turned to Dr Google and saw that my symptoms perfectly matched the symptoms for OC.

I don't want to scare you, but if you are getting those symptoms i would certainly ask for the blood test to rule this out.

Thinking of you!
