Preggo friendly starter recipe?

I'm having a meal in with the family this NYE and we can't decide on a nice starter. Both me and SIL are pregnant (due 1 day apart - weird!) and struggling to come up with ideas. We've had a quite a bit of smoked salmon over Christmas so don't want to use this, hate mushrooms and if I eat one more bowl of soup....

Having steak pie for main and pavlova for dessert.

Any ideas??? x

Melon balls?

Terrine?

Winter salad?

Prawn cocktail (depends on your view on cold prawns though)

Philly chilli! Get a large tub of philadelphia cream cheese (biggest you can find) and a presentation plate (ie large one). Take the lid off the philadelphia, plonk it in the middle of the plate upside down then take off the
Tub (like you're making a sandcastle).

Tip over an entire bottle of sweet chilli sauce.

Garnish with a snipped bunch of fresh coriander.

Serve with a packet of water biscuits arranged all around the edge: plonk in middle of table and guests help themselves.

V yummy, v simple, looks surprisingly good and takes 2 mins to make!

Ps do use the full fat cream cheese as it is far far tastier then low fat stuff.

I was tasked with the bringing the starter for our NYE celebrations and decided on stuffed mushrooms (although not good for you if you're not keen!) Other options we considered were soups, loaded potato skins, winter salads, canapes instead of starters and bruschettas.

Loaded potato skins sound yummy. :)

Mozzarella, tomato & basil?

Crap cakes & salad?

Dressed tinned crap & avocado?

Any of those lovely mini bites from M&S?

Like the canapés idea too!

Baked camembert? Easy and looks good, and a preggo friendly way of eating soft cheese as it's thoroughly cooked.

Not fancying stripey's crap cakes idea Wink

bruchetta

toasted slices of ciabatta, rub with garlic, and add vine tomatoes diced with olive oil, seasoning and fresh basil. Divine. Good quality ingredients essential.

Tinned crap??? Shock where would one find such a thing?? Grin

cupcaketrix · 31/12/2011 13:36

Ooh many good suggestions thanks ladies! I by-passed the crap cakes and went for some M&S goodies :) I would have been happy with melon balls or bruschetta but the rest of the family wanted something a bit more special.

So we got a few boxes of party foods which came with free wine! We obviously won't get to enjoy these but the rest of the family does so a winner all round! Grin
