DH and I have had an argument over the bank holiday. I am 28 weeks now, starting the third trimester. Therefore, I am in my 7th month of pregnancy. I tell people that I am 7 months pregnant. He said that I am wrong, and am 6 months pregnant, not 7 months pregnant. AFAIK, this is how everyone refers to their pregnancies by the month they are in, even if you haven't finished it.

I tried to explain that if I told that I was 6 months pregnant now, people would think my baby is due in April, not March.

Am I wrong?

You are correct to say you are IN your 7th month of pregnancy but you are not 7 months pregnant yet. So sorry you are wrong. For example when your baby is born it is in its 1st year of life but it is not 1 until it reaches its first birthday. You will be 7mths pg at 31wks.

KatAndKit · 29/12/2011 10:41

Just use the weeks method, it's much easier. You are 6 1/2 months pregnant.

Mum2be79 · 29/12/2011 11:49

Yep. Much easier to use the weeks method and better too because it changes weekly whereas by saying you are '... months' only changes monthly and makes the pregnancy 'prolonged'. Grin

icooksocks · 29/12/2011 12:19

I'd say you were 6 months pregnant-sorry.

EdithWeston · 29/12/2011 12:25

If a month was four weeks, then you'd be right.

But pregnancy is nine calendar months, not ten lunar ones, and calendar months are three or four days longer than lunar ones. So I'd say six and a half.

savoycabbage · 29/12/2011 12:31

No, I would think your baby was due in march. My dh does this sometimes, my dd is eight and he will say she is nine and it drives me doo-lally. I forget how old I am as he will have added on a year Confused

buonasera · 29/12/2011 13:03

Agree you're 6 and a bit months pregnant, and that weeks are more useful than months, as month lengths vary. Anyway there's 13 weeks/3 months in a trimester, so for you that's 6 months with 2 weeks left over.

And for the whole "6 months vs month 7" thing I think of it as being the same as the centuries e.g. 20th century was 1900-1999.

lljkk · 29/12/2011 13:15

There are more than 4 weeks in a month.
Very simple.
Do not think of 4 weeks = 1 month because that is completely WRONG. Just as there are not 13 calendar months in a year either.
So by 28 weeks you are only about 6 months pregnant; you have 12 weeks left which is closer to 3 months left.

diedandgonetodevon · 29/12/2011 13:20

Well, I am due on the 9th of Feb so I am currently 7 months pregnant. 8 months on the 9th of Jan and 9 months at full term.

jade80 · 29/12/2011 13:28

I doubt most people will care if you're due in March or April. Those likely to care presumably know your due date? And the rest of the world probably wouldn't even bother working out what month you were due, whether you said 6 months or 7 months. FWIW though, I think you're 6 months.

catsareevil · 29/12/2011 13:37

You are 6 months pregnant.

People dont refer to pregnancy by the month they are in, but by the number of completed months.

blushingmare · 29/12/2011 15:21

I tend to use weeks, but some people find that hard to compute so then use months, based on my due date. ie. I'm due on the 4th June, therefore I'll be 4 months pregnant on 4th January. So at the mo I'm saying "nearly 4 months!"

MrsCog · 29/12/2011 15:41

You're right that you're IN the 7th month (like me I'm due in March too), but you are not 7 months pg yet - you'll be 7 months pg at some point in January - for me it will be January 8th.

Xmasbaby11 · 29/12/2011 15:43

You're about 6 months pregnant. This is easier than giving it in weeks, which are of course more accurate. I seriously doubt anyone will call you on it!

LAF77 · 30/12/2011 18:58

Thanks for all your replies. I hate being wrong! All of the confusion came about when someone asked me not to say it in weeks, as they couldn't think in weeks. I will stick with weeks, and tell those who are determined to know, that I am in my 7th month of pregnancy!

I thought it was

4 - 8 weeks - 1 month pg
8 - 12 weeks - 2 months pg
12 - 16 weeks - 3 months pg
16 - 20 weeks - 4 months pg
20 - 24 weeks - 5 months pg
24 - 28 weeks - 6 months pg
28 - 32 weeks - 7 months pg
32 - 36 weeks - 8 months pg
36 - 40 weeks - 9 months pg

and that's how far along I told people I was throughout my pregnancy. So I wouldn't say you were wrong otherwise people at 10 weeks would be saying they are a month and a half and people would assume they were 6 weeks IYSWIM.

Am almost 42 weeks pg now though and 10 months pregnant doesn't seem right to say though Hmm
