Cervix panic

Hi, I've just come off the pill and we're ttc, but I've got worried as I had a colposcopy years ago and they removed some cells-it was either a biopsy or treatment (Lletz), I'm going to try and find out which. When I have my smears, they often comment they can see I've had treatment. I'm worried this might put me at an increased risk of miscarriage (have heard an incomplete cervix can do that), am really worried to be honest. Has anyone else had this and got pregnant or know any stories about this? Thanks

I had the loop wire treatment (think it's the same as Lletz) years ago as well. I was told by a consultant that it could mean that I would go into labour a week or two early but that they didn't consider it a problem. Turns out she was wrong, I'm now 41 weeks

I've had a couple of cervical treatments, loop wire, electrolosis and biopsy as well as a ton of smears and two laparoscopies with two hysteroscopy (I've got endometreosis). I'm surprised I have anything of my cervix left! There was slight concern that the gyne surgery I've had could higher my risk of eptopic pregnancy or early miscarriage but it didn't. My EPAU were great and scanned me early because of pains and my panic.

I was considered as having unexplained fertility issues. If you are worried I'd say speak to your GP and ask for a referral to a consultant for a check of your cervix. One of my issues was scaring caused by the loop wire meant that my cervix wasn't opening properly. Not trying to scare you, just an idea that if you are concerned get them to check you out as they can fix it, they did for me anyway.

Just to add to that - I had an lletz two weeks ago and asked the question about whether my cervix would have problems is pregnancy as we're looking to ttc this year. He said one treatment has no effect whatsoever. Two has minimal. Really try not to worry.

Xmasmummy I've had laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, d&c, lletz and numerous swabs and internals too...really nice to see a pregnant lady who has been through some of the same. Fingers crossed in a years time I'll be in your position if I'm lucky. Congratulations :)

Thanks so much for getting back to me, I'm feeling a bit better now it's daylight and not 4am! I spoke to my doctor and it was a loop diathermy I had - do you know if that's the same as the loop wire you had xmasmumtobe? Have made an appointment with the doctor for next weds to talk about it. I'm just worried as they can see it's bad scarring when I have my smears. Hubby is being supportive about my worries-thank god! Really don't want to stress though as that could do more harm than good!

CassMonkey yes that's the same as I had. I did have some scarring but that wasn't seen by anyone until I went of a hysteroscopy because the scarring was inside my cervix which was closed IYSWIN actually in the hole/opening so my cervix wasn't opening and closing slightly as it should do at certain points in my cycle so ttc was difficult and periods were painful. They removed the scarring with electrolysis and some other pre cancerous cells. If your scarring can be seen it could be in a different place and not cause issues at all. I had about 3-5mm off the entire end of my cervix removed via loop wire. Ask how much they removed, it may not have been off the full circumference, possibly just a section a bit like a biopsy with the loop wire just being the method of removal not the extent, I hope that makes sense. Don't stress yourself but stand up for yourself, don't let them fob you off without looking. Make sure they explain themselves thoroughly to put your mind at rest. Fingers crossed for your appointment, tell us how it goes I'm sure you'll be fine, my cervix was a mess and I still got pregnant successfully in the end.

I also had a colposcopy and loop excision. I was worried about cervical incompetence (delightful phrase) but had no problems ttc - mentioned it to MW at booking appointment and she referred me for consultant care. I had an internal scan at about 17 weeks and cervical length was fine.

I think it's quite a comon procedure and you are certainly not going to be the first person asking the question so please don't feel uncomfortable - similarly as xmasmummy says, don't let them fob you off. So many people say "you're not the first and you won't be the last" or "you're not the ONLY one to be going through this" but it doesn't make YOU feel any more confident about it!

But please don't stress about it. Even if there are potential issues you can access help/treatment, including potential stitching of the cervix to prevent early opening if necessary.

Hi cassmonkey, I had a biopsy where they actually removed quite a bit of the cervix and had DD with no problems at all. I am now pregnant with DC2 and similar to Hermione have been under consultant care having my cervix length checked - they are measuring it every 2 weeks between about 16-24 wks and so far it's been fine. Again I would say try not to worry (easier said than done I know!), just make sure you let the midwife know at your booking in appt. And good luck TTC!

And I totally agree with you all that I should mention it to MW/doctors and then make sure they keep an eye on the situation if I do get pregnant. I'll let you know how I get on with the appointment next week and will ask the question about how much they removed and how bad the scarring is.

I'm sure there are sadder stories out there but hopefully the chances are good for me. I had honestly started to worry that what I had done was very rare so it's reassuring to hear other people have gone through the same thing with good outcomes. One thing that didn't help me is that I didn't feel great about the doctor who did the treatment (he seemed very young and not very confident), and being younger at the time myself, I went along with it all without asking enough questions and it wasn't explained to me very well. I've also been worried as I came of the pill around 2 years ago to give my body a break, and didn't really get periods for around 6-9 months (I've never been regular). They suspected PCO but I don't see the point in getting blood tests for that though, as if I have it, there is nothing I can do about it (am healthy and slim) so I might as well get going with ttc and see what happens for a while! For both these reasons, I'm not sure the chances are great for me but we're still excited about ttc and hubby and I have our fingers crossed, even if it may take a while!

I had cone,loop wire,last year, July , they took top of the cervix, I started ttc in may this year and pg in august unfortunately mc in oct but now pg again, nothing to do with loop wire internal scan said all good down there so good luck and fingers crossed x
