16 weeks & no weight gain

Well the title says it all really, should I be worried? I'm actually 3lb lighter than when I got my bfp. I was very nauseous at first but eating was the one thing that helped so I haven't been not eating & to my shame I haven't suddenly become a salad lover either.

My BMI is high anyway (36 just). I know that's not ideal but its too late now. Baby was fine at 12 week scan & at appointment last week midwife had a poke about and said size felt fine, heart beat was loud & clear, blood pressure & sugar normal , but she was too busy warning me about excessive weight gain to let me get a word in about the fact that I've lost rather than gained weight. I haven't been weighed since my initial Dr appointment at 5 weeks. Obviously I'm concerned about gaining too much but would have expected a pound or 2 on by now. Am I worrying about nothing?

I've never put on weight all the way through my pregnancy and I'm now 40+1. I lost some weight in first trimester, put all back on and then at last weigh in at 34+6, I weighed 1kg less than my pre-pregnancy weight. I have a bmi of 57 so consultant at the hospital was very happy that I hadn't gained any weight as they'd initially advised I didn't gain more than 6kg from pre-pregnancy weight. If your baby is doing okay at scans and growing normally (and mine has been), I wouldn't worry about it.

rufusnine · 22/12/2011 22:28

During 1st pregnancy when i was about bmi 27 I lost a stone and didn't get up to normal weight til 6 months. 3rd pregnancy when i was bmi 33 at start I only put half a stone on in total and baby was 8lb 6 oz!!! So don't worry - your body and baby will sort itself out!!

sillymillyb · 22/12/2011 22:44

Dont worry! I hadn't gained any weight at this point either and was told it was more than likely because I had given up drinking and was eating better (and puking lots) so that cancelled out the weight gain I would have got from the baby.

I am now 27 weeks and have only put on 4llbs - I mentioned it to the midwife a few days ago and she said that it was fine, that they didn't weigh mothers any more as the baby would take all the nutrients they needed and would only be concerned if he was showing any problems.

Mention it to your midwife if you are worried but try not to panic, so long as your baby is growing and looking ok on the scans it should be fine

I think it's a good thing, if your pre pregnancy weight is above ideal then it's advisable to put on as little as possible. I'm 21 + 5 and have only put on a few lbs in the last week or so. At 16weeks I hadn't gained anything either and was worrying.I didn't get morning sickness so it wasn't that but my food portions have been a lot smaller not because iv tried just because I can't fit the same amount in and my appetite has just shrunk, so think it may be that. I really wouldn't worry, if your baby is healthy and growing fine, it will be better on your body of u keep your BMI close to what it is now. X

puzzlesum · 23/12/2011 09:18

I hadn't really put any on by this stage either, really only noticed that I couldn't fasten the waistband of my jeans. As long as the baby's weight is fine, and you're getting all your nutrients I wouldn't worry about it. Are you managing to keep active? Walking can be great if you've got the energy for it.

Oeisha · 23/12/2011 10:14

As long as you were a moderate or 'overweight' BMI at booking (which you were), and you're exercising moderatly and eating healthily then no. There's no reason at all why they would re-weigh you. The only think to watch for is the under eating (I've gone off food totally all the way through). They'll pick up on that with your many urine dips and symptoms like tiredness though.
I was just "overweight" and am only at 36wks finally putting on a bit - 3lb-5lb over pre-pg. My weight is now fluctuating a lot with retention and slight constipation so, well, who knows.

Mention it to MW, but try not to stress (that advice hasnt' helped me, still paranoid), but LO will be stealing everything they need from you.
Basically, eat regularly and healthily exercise moderatly.

melliebobs · 23/12/2011 12:27

I'm 31+5 and only gained a pound so far. It's the last few weeks where I've been old ill pile it on

CeeCee41 · 23/12/2011 17:05

Thanks everyone, feeling somewhat reassured.
Thinking about it now i think my eating has become a lot more about being hungry than it ever was before, was a real by the clock & emotional eater. I used to walk 2 to 4 miles 5 days a week, which stopped during the first tri as too nauseous and tired, now back to walking 3 days a week (give or take) planning some swimming after xmas, it's in the warm at least.

I have a higher about the same as yours and have always lost weight when I'm pregnant. Not through trying but I guess just through healthier eating.
Last time I lost about 15 kg 3 stone ish. All my baby's have been healthy weight of between 6 13 and 7 4 they always take what they need.
Now to work out how to keep it off after.

abababafoof · 24/12/2011 07:07

I'm so glad to see all of this. I thought there was something wrong with me! I'm 15+6 and have a normal BMI but haven't put on any weight and can still fit into my clothes. I find people look at me as if I'm lying about my pregnancy!
I swim maybe 2 times a week if I get the chance to fit it in around work but was really starting to worry that there was something wrong with me. I can't wait for my bump to arrive!

clairebear88 · 24/12/2011 14:23

dont panic as if you have a higher bmi when you fall the pregnancy hormones sometimes speed up your metabloism. my bmi was 30 when i fell and by 28 wks i had only put on 7lbs. im now 39 weeks and have put on 15lbs. i was really surprised as i thought id be the type to put on 5 stone lol.
good luck with everything

OhFraktiousTree · 24/12/2011 15:39

I didn't put any weight on until after 24 weeks and then put on 3kgs in a month and grew a bump literally overnight. I had a BMI of 19 too so it's not necessarily to do with your starting weight. The baby takes what they need, the body produces what it needs for itself and as long as you're not trying to starve you're probably fine.

JambalayaWarmMincePie · 24/12/2011 16:31

Im 23 weeks and have gained 1lb. BMI of 23 - so slap bang in the middle of 'normal'.

Everyones different! :)

DreamingOfAWhiteChristmas · 24/12/2011 16:57

I'm BMI of 20 and last pg due to morning sickness was still 3lb under pre pg weight at 15 weeks.

This time same starting BMI but lost even more, even worse vomiting/ hyperemesis, now at 23+2 I've put on a stone since pre pg weight but I'm having twins and look about 30 weeks!!!!

Don't worry, reckon you and baby are just fine and doing well not to be putting too much on

first1 · 25/12/2011 00:28

My bmi was 19 when I got pregnant, I didn't put on any weight at all until 26 weeks. Went to sleep one night, woke up with a bump and a 1/2 stone instant weight gain. Then another stone by the end of it all. We are all different!

starshaker · 25/12/2011 00:30

when i was pg with the twins i put on about 14lbs during the whole thing. The twins were 5lbs each. Dont worry, as long as you are eating well i wouldnt worry about how much weight you gain

CointreauHoHoHoVersial · 25/12/2011 00:37

Same as most of the others. I actually lost weight in the first 3-4 months, mainly because I went off food. It only went on in the last 3 months.

Relax, you are fine!
