I had an early scan on monday and a heartbeat was detected along with yolk sac and was dated between 5 & 6 wks. All last night I was feeling really poorly and when I got up this morning I noticed some brown discharge in my knickers and when wiping. I now have lower back pain and am obviously very worried. I have seen the dr and he said it is threatened at this stage as im not losing fresh blood but if I do then I am to go to hospital strait away. It seems so cruel after seeing that little heartbeat :(

I don't know about chances but have had same and lost 3 babies at 6 weeks but also brown blood (no cramp that I recall) and am now 35 weeks.

I had brown discharge, back pain and lower tummy pain between 4 and 5 weeks. I was told it was hormonal with my body thinking it should be menstruating. Brown is apparently old blood and lesser of a worry than fresh red blood. I am now a healthy 18 weeks on. Would be advisable to phone your early pregnancy unit or midwife though to get checked over.

Hiya I totally know what you're going through and sympathise. I had bleeding a couple of times in the first 12 weeks and it's so scary, but I'm now 40 weeks and all fine. The blood I had was sometimes brown and sometimes bright red. All you can do is each time it happens get it checked at the hospital and hear that heartbeat again. Try to keep thinking positively. Lots of women bleed and go on to have very healthy pregnancies and no one can explain the bleeding - you'll find much about pregnancy seems to be unknown to doctors! Monitoring is all you can do.

Hi vinolover I had a similar experience at 5 and 7 weeks (i'm now 39 weeks so keep positive!) The first bleed was brown and it was too early for me to have a scan so they took bloods several days apart to confirm that my hormone levels were increasing as expected with viable pregnancy. This came back fine and then a scan at 7 weeks showed a heart beat.

5 days later I had a bigger bleed and really thought that was it. Had to fight to get another scan at casualty (they tried to reason my scan was fine at the start of the week...!!!) and when I finally persuaded them, they found a heart beat again and a subchorionic haematoma - this was a small blood clot which I was passing. The bleeding lasted for about 5 days and I took a few days off to put my feet up. The rest of the pregnancy has been great. This thread talks about this at length:

Hope this helps :)

Hey, I am 13 weeks and had red and brown bleeding at various points after a 6 week scan. The first 12 weeks are a hell of panic and puking and panic again but my bub is still fine... all in all i'd say your chances of all being ok are actually pretty good... but you won't believe it until it all works out :) good luck to you sand try to relax! I actually paid for a private scan at 9 weeks that really calmed me down so it might be worth booking something to look forward to

Isn't it the worst! I had the same and am now 21 weeks with a healthy baby boy - so it's not all doom! Get on the phone to the GP or early pregnancy unit and get advice, but I would say rest and don't panic (yeah right). Red blood is more if a worry than brown. Good luck I hope in 8 months time you have a little bubba in your arms :)
