Subchorionic hematoma - any experience?

am now 8-9 weeks and on my 3rd visit to EPU following a sudden bleed which then abruptly stopped , was told I had a subchorionic hematoma. Consultant sent me off saying bleeds would probably happen again but nothing to really worry about in 1st trimester.

Obviously I went away and googled over the weekend....lots of conflicting information

At my booking in appointment yesterday I asked the midwife if there was anything I should/shouldn't be be doing. She said that I should carry on as normal (have a 15mth dd so no rest there) but let's get past the 16 week mark and see what's what.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this, or any advice?

I'm 19 weeks pregnant - I had a scan at 8w too and they noticed a subchorionic hematoma but there was no sign of it by my next scan at 12w 4d. The sonographer said they don't really know much about it and that it might be really common before 12 weeks but they wouldn't normally know because few people get a scan before 11 or 12 weeks.

The nurse at my place said to avoid heavy lifting but I think she gave me that advice for want of something more concrete to say really.

Hi, I had one with last pregnancy and with this one and at first I was so worried like you, but everything was fine.

They only worry if it's big!

I got told it's just blood where the baby buried it's self so snug

I had the same thing when I was pregnant with DD. Had some scary bleeds in the first 4/5 months but everything was fine. When I had scans at 7 and 13 weeks I was hold to expect some significant bleeding but it doesn't stop it being terrifying whenever it happens.

Hi. Yes i had one in my first pregnancy that first became evident at 8 weeks. There was a lot of on and off bleeding and sometimes the bleeding was very heavy. I kept popping back for scans and the baby was growing fine, heartbeat good. I was told that in most cases the bleed either bleeds itself out or gets reabsorbed and there is no need for worry. I was actually put on complete bedrest for a couple of weeks. From what i could read on the internet there are conflicting ideas on whether bedrest make much difference, but i was told to carry nothing heavier than a bag of sugar and they were quite strict about that. I'm surprised your midwife didn't say this to you.

Sadly in my case I did end up miscarrying at 11 weeks. My doctor was very surprised. I had done lots and lots of googling and the chances of it being just fine are very high (i think around 80 - 85%) so focus on this. Subchorionic hematomas are actually quite common. it's actually quite reassuring to have the bleeding diagnosed as a subchorionic hematoma and not something more sinister, however I do know that it's not nice to see blood during pregnancy.

Thanks everyone for replying, feel a bit more re-assured now. Had a miscarriage in September so don't want to be going through that again so soon.

Think the midwife took one look at dd and decided there wasn't much chance of bedrest, but hopefully dh and grandparents will take some of the strain during the holidays

I had a large SCH (11x7x4 cm at 8w) with DD. It was straight after my 2nd miscarriage so I was pretty worried too. I bled from 6-22w, sometimes huge gushes or large clots (like golf balls or bigger), and lost consciousness from blood loss a couple of times. However, DD was fine. It can seem like the worst and still be ok! Good luck.

Wing - blimey, that sounds horrendous! Glad everything turned out ok.
