I would have always said yes before but i done it and had a bad reaction my whole head turned red and itchy with loads of wee red bumps! I think it's just because my skins more sensitive than usual but i'd be careful anyway.

Imnotaslimjim · 17/12/2011 12:17

It is safe, just make sure you do the sensitivity test as per the box as being pg makes you more sensitive to things like this. I dye my hair every 6/8 weeks and still do the test every time

My hair dresser says yes, but you are more likely to have an allergic reaction or the colour come out strange when you are pregnant.

I did mine and it was fine. As others have said just do the patch test first, even if it's abrand you usually use.

my book says there isn't enough research to know for certain. I've personally made decision not to dye my hair for at least the first 4 months. (and will suffer the grey hairs!)

i mean they don't know if the chemicals can pass in any way to baby- not whether its safe for you.

I was asking my hairdresser about this the other day.

His answer was that there is no evidence that proves one way or the other. After all, who would agree to be tested on while pregnant? So really no research to back it up either way.

He also said that most people seem to choose to dye their hair as normal but there are lots of people who wait. I went for it, it's my second pregnancy and I did it throughout my first without any problems. That said I have worried a bit about it since that conversation and may now wait until afterwards before doing it again.

I got highlights when pg and all was fine. You could have a bad reaction if pg / not so def do the patch test. MiL had a v bad reaction to a dye shed used many times, face swole up, eyes looked tiny and v painful...

Good luck!

ScarletFestiveFingernail · 17/12/2011 19:10

I think highlights are believed to be fine, as they don't usually touch the scalp so not absorbed into the body.

OP do you mean an all over colour or highlights? My reply above was regarding all over colour.

I waited last time until about 27 weeks by which time I was SO white at the roots I was just too fed up to wait any longer! I am 15 weeks now and haven't done it yet but I haven't been feeling fabulous and that has more to do with it than any fears. I will do it before Christmas!

bonbonpixie · 17/12/2011 19:45

I had my roots bleached twice whilst pregnant (didn't know) and I feel fine about it, when asked my hairdresser assured me that there is no evidence to suggest any damage is caused to the baby. However it was so itchy, a different reaction to normal, it actually prompted the rush to the chemist for a test! I did go back to my hair natural colour when I found out as i just didn't want to risk it and have to sit breathing in all those chemicals. But everybody's different.
