Midwife appts between christmas and new year

If I don't have my baby within the next 2 weeks, I'm supposed to have my 41wk midwife appt in the week between christmas and new year (EDD is 21st Dec). I'm just wondering what tends to happen as my GP surgery only really does emergency appts between christmas and new year, they don't have full surgeries and I'm wondering if this will be the case with the midwife as well. I have my 40wk appt next week so can ask her but I'm thinking about it right now and wondered what other's experience was. It's my first pregnancy and am still feeling quite comfortable (currently 38+6) so am still keen to avoid sweeps and inductions; I realise that this might not continue to be the case but I can only go on how I feel right now. I'm under shared consultant/midwife care and was told that I'd be offered an induction at 40+12 if the baby hadn't come by then, which I think is pretty standard practice.

I've got my 40 week appointment on the 28th at the Midwife clinic as normal, they're only closed for the bank holidays.

It's business as usual for babies. Due between Xmas and new year and pretty sure bub doesn't know the world's got the week off. Hopefully my grumpy midwife will have a bit of Christmas cheer about her....!

That's great, thank you. My surgery has its midwife appts on Thursdays only which is a normal day so hopefully all will be well. Well, actually, hopefully baby will have already arrived and it'll be a non-issue!

I've been wondering about this as I'm due on 30th, but I should be having an appointment with her on the 29th (her usual Thursday clinic). BUT I know my regular CMW, who I've seen at all my appointments but one, is on leave for the whole period between Christmas and New Year so I have no idea what the arrangement for my appointment will be....

Another question to ask...I hope she's in a better mood that last time!

I'm having my 23 weeks check up on the 29th. So think they carry on as usual

I just booked one for 28th, as my 32-week one would be Christmas Day! I asked for a couple days before but they were booked all the previous week, so 28th it is.

Don't you have to book appts in advance? I've got my 36-week one booked already too.

Secondtimelucky · 13/12/2011 17:12

Round here they would only do people like you in the holidays. For example, with DD1 they asked if I minded not having a 40 week appointment as it was the Easter week (Monday clinic). Wasn't bothered so didn't. Overdue is a bit different though. Mind you, my area only offers induction at +14 as standard I have recently dissevered, so maybe even you wouldn't get an appointment! [overrun London trust].

Fingers crossed it won't come to that!

hi fhdl34 I am in a similar situation, due on the 20th. I have my 40 week appt next Thursday (22nd) when I will be 40+2. normally I'd be happy to have a sweep but I don't want to encourage baby to arrive on Xmas day, so will decline one and have it the week after instead. I'm sure MW appts will be running as normal that week - they are normal working days in the NHS.

fhdl34 · 13/12/2011 17:42

We don't book all ours in advance, when I have my appt she books the next one in there and then. Our surgery does booking in appts on Fridays and all other midwife appts on Thursdays. I would imagine if my MW is off that week they'll have a locum in as they did a few weeks back if they're running clinic as normal. I'm hoping she won't want to book an induction next week, as I've heard that can happen, at 40 weeks they book you in for 2 weeks time just in case.

Just had a moment of clarity and decided to ring my doctors and ask. My midwife is running a clinic as normal on 29th so there should be no problem being seen. Let's hope baby decides to come out before then as that's the day my brother and his kids return home to America so they'll have come all this way and won't have seen their new cousin if s/he's not out!
