Im 35 weeks with my first baby and curious to know peoples experiences.

At our 20 week scan the sonographer said it was a boy (although we know it's not 100% certain at this stage), so we've been buying various blue items (also lots of White baby grows too just in case it's a girl!).

We really aren't bothered as long as baby is healthy, but I've heard of girls turning out to be boys, but not the other way round (obviously as the ahem "parts" were hidden at the scan).

Not me but my friend was told throughout her pregnancy it was a girl and instead out popped a boy.

I'd heard that if they say 'boy' then they're virtually 100% positive because they've seen the genitals. If they say 'girl' it can still go either way because the genitals if in fact baby is a boy may just be hidden. Don't know how true that is though.

I met a couple at a wedding last week with their beautiful 2 week old baby girl. They were told at the 20 week scan that she was a boy (I already knew this as they were friends of the bride so I went to talk to them about it as I'm due shortly as well). Luckily they hadn't bought lots of boy stuff as they already had a DS so were just using his old stuff but obviously they've now been shopping lol. Their daughter was gorgeous and so well behaved, practically slept through the whole reception!

Mine were all correct - 2 boys and then a girl.

With the girl the sonographer referred to it as the hamburger - as thats what the 3 lines resembled apparently.

NHS 20 week scan - Almost certainly a boy
Babybond private scan at 22 wks - Girl
Was a girl

A couple of friends have been told G and had B.

TysTheSeasonToBeJolly · 11/12/2011 19:26

Mine were correct, boy then girl.
With dd we had a private scan at 16 weeks, and they showed us how they know it is a girl. Her 'bits' were definate iykwim.

We were told baby is a boy at the 20 week scan, well DP saw the obvious and the sonographer confirmed "it certainly looks like a boy". Midwife keeps asking do we know the sex yet at each appointment when she checks the heartbeat and then proceeds to say "yes definitely sounds like a boy".

But I keep having dreams that the baby is a girl! 39 weeks now so will find out either way soon.

MiauMau · 11/12/2011 23:48

Definitely a boy, I saw it with my own eyes also the sonographer said 5 minutes into the scan "do you want to know the gender? Because I already know!". Guess the little bugger started flash as soon as she touched my belly :o

cherryjellybelly · 12/12/2011 10:06

I was told I was having a boy. She whizzed around quickly, said she was 87% sure and that was that. Until 20 weeks later, out came our little girl! It must have been an umbilical cord or something else in the wrong place at the wrong time!

mummytobeagainxx · 12/12/2011 10:21

as far as i know there correct by me having a girl as they said the 3 lines are the sign for a girl and i actualy saw it with my own eyes lol. ive already got a little boy so so happy to have a lil girl!! good luck :)xx

brettgirl2 · 12/12/2011 11:19

I dont know anyone who has been told incorrectly. The cord was in the way at my scan and sonographer said they only say if they are certain.

MW reckons boy from the heartbeat.... anyone know how reliable this is likely to be?!

louby86 · 12/12/2011 11:51

The sonographer at my 20 week scan was certain we were having a girl, she even showed us what she thought were the girl bits! Believing she knew best we bought some pink things, especially as she seemed so certain!

Fast forward 10 weeks, I'm now expecting a boy after my 4d scan and have definitely, no mistake seen boy parts with my own eyes!

The sonographer at the 4d scan said it's more common to be told you're having a girl and it comes out a boy than the other way round. Apparently there can be some confusion with the 3 lines you see for a girl and the 3 lines you can see in the cord.

A friend was told she was having a boy from the 20wk scan. It turned out to be a girl. I didn't know it's possible to mistook a girl for a boy before because of the genitals. But hey it's possible!

Danielle91291 · 28/12/2021 21:17

I’m told boy at 14 week scan but something doesn’t feel right...would you say boy?

DoG87 · 28/12/2021 21:29

I’ve been told I’m having a boy, first at my 20 week hospital scan & again at a private scan around a month or so later. I had to go for a growth scan at the hospital last week. Me & the sonographer had a bit of a chuckle as my baby was proudly showing off his testicles! Grin
