Maternity clothes sizing? Pre pregnancy size or do you go up a size --or ten--?

Hello im in desperate need of some maternity clothes but no where in my town has any, they all advise me to go online or out of town to bigger stores.

I need some clothes desperatly or i shall soon end up nakey Xmas Blush

I have found some online but do i need to order the size i was before pregnant (my guess is this because they have room for a bump in they should fit) or do i need to go up a size or so? I dont really have the time untill i have finished for christmas so going out of town isnt so much a option atm.

Thanks in advance

How far along are you and how much weight have you put on? I bought a lot of maternity things in a size up thinking they'd be cut small but tbh my weight gain hasn't been excessive and at 25 weeks maternity clothes in my usual size still have lots of room. Next are the worst offenders imo, their clothes are cut huge. H and M are a law unto themselves, apparently a 10-12 is large Hmm

I hate to say, but it really does depends on which shop you go for. I think all the website say you should order your pre-pregnancy size, but IMHO they all lie - in Next and Mothercare, I've gone a size smaller, and in Mamas and Papas, I've gone 2 sizes smaller (ie 12-14 rather than 16-18). I think H&M is the only place where I get the same size as I did before. I've never had to go up sizes.

Sorry that's not much help, it is a minefield out there!

What I have got so far has mostly been from New Look (jeans and black trousers) and I am ok in my normal size at 22 weeks. It depends on how much you have put on in other areas apart from the bump region. If you think you have gained more than average then you might need to go up a size, but in general, you should be fine with your normal size, at least for now.

It is so annoying that they don't stock the stuff in the shops so you can actually try it on. I hate buying clothes online.

Go up a size in H&M in final trimester, go up a size in Seraphine. Most of my may clothes came from JojomamanBebe and Next and they fitted fine in pre pg size. Oh, Dotty P mat clothes come up enormous!

grr just typed post and its gone.

thanks for the quick reply.

i was about 14/16 on top and bottom pre pregnancy and only seem to have put a little on around the waist. unfortunatly i wasnt blessed with a wash board stomach pre pregnancy, so the baby bump seems to have merged with my apple shape into a huge stomach delightful. ive gone for the 18 top as have had to up bra sizes too but think a 16 trousers may be fine (hopeful emotion).

thanks again :)

H&M is just random. I've got maternity clothes from there in small (tops for work), medium (pull on skirt) and large (hoodie) and they all fit perfectly!

Gap are good - go for your usual size. M&S stuff is MASSIVE! Topshop is fairly good, but at 29 weeks I'm finding their skinny jeans impossible on my hips, and wish I'd bought a size up.

took me two weeks and was v depressed looking for maternity trousers. H&M you might need to go a size up. matalan have an online maternity range.

good luck

Every shop infact every item of clothing seems to differ for me!! I was a 14 before becoming PG & found that even in the early stages some 14's were too tight...jeans/trousers are a mine field.. I found some waist bands over or under bump were huge but then the bit under the elastic (hip area) was too tight!! my wardrobe at the moment & Im 29 weeks goes from size 12 to size 20!!! I have given up on trying to find a pair of mat skinny jeans that fit & feel will soon give up on looking slightly fashionable really soon & stick to comfort!! (which is basically leggings/yoga pants or P.J'S)!!
My advice try everything on before you buy & buy little at a time to suit the coming few weeks.
P.s don't get me started on mat knickers!!! over the bump ones are like circus tents & under the bump ones feel like they are falling down!!! grrrrrrr

MillyStar · 12/12/2011 11:32

I've had to buy a size smaller than my pre pregnancy size, i bought my normal size without trying on and everything was huuuuuuge!

MiauMau · 12/12/2011 11:44

I'm still the same size in maternity clothes, but I've mainly bought mine at mamas and papas. I've also got some tops from Uniqlo and those are quite long so I just bought size L.

cobysstepmummy · 12/12/2011 14:30

I tried in a 20 in Mothercare and couldn't even get them over my thighs Blush but a 20 from Mamas and Papas fit fine but are now a little tight around the bump band but I am 37wks!! I have also found that next are pretty big sizing a 20 is a struggle to keep up!! As for tops I have some from Dorothy Perkins that are a 22 and fit fine, but am still wearing some of my pre pregnancy size 18 tops
Hope that helps a little!!

Chynah · 12/12/2011 16:02

buy the same size as you were before pregnancy. had mostly Next, H&M, Dorothy Perkins.

justhayley · 12/12/2011 21:27
