How sure are you of your dates? They date these things from your last period, but the assumption behind that is that you ovulated 14 days after your period, so if you have a long or irregular cycle that could be out by quite a bit.

If you're really sure you should be 8+ weeks then you should ask for another scan in a week or two, to make sure everything is progressing properly.

Well I thought I was quite sure about my dates. I did speak to my midwife and she said everything is normal. She said its more than likely I caught later than what we all thought. Can that be right?xx

You could have ovulated or implanted later than implied by the date of your last period - sounds like that's what she's talking about. But I would still ask for a follow up scan to make sure all is progressing properly. The worst she can do is say no...

How regular are your cycles? Are you certain of when your LMP was? I had really irregular cycles when I conceived and when my poor GP got his wheel out to work out my dates he quickly put it away again when I told him my cycles were anything from 3 to 10 weeks.

Early pregnancy scans are relatively spot on with dates, I think that between 4 and 7 weeks what can be seen and sizes of sac and baby are pretty much the same for every woman.

Are you booked in for a repeat scan? Best of luck X

My cycle varys anywhere between 21 to 25 days. The day of my period was 11th october which made me 8+ weeks. But the scan said I'm 5+ weeks. Its so hard to work what date we actually conceived. Wen I count back 5 weeks it takes me back to to the date I actually found out I was pregnant. I aint got a scan til 11th january xx

If your cycles can vary then that means that it's very possibly you ovulated later than usual. Has anything different or stressful happened since the first day of your LMP? If so that'd explain possibly why you may have ovulated later.

If they said you are 5 weeks then that means you conceived 3 weeks ago so very strange if had a positive pregnancy test 5 weeks ago.

I am a little confused myself though I didn't think a baby gained a heart beat until you were 6weeks +. Perhaps they haven't explained themselves very well to you. Did you get any CRM measurements (crown to rump)? I know that with my 5 week scan also an internal they could barely see the dot that may have been the baby let alone a heartbeat. Unless of course the sonographer meant you are 5 weeks since conception which would make you 7 weeks + using dr's method. That doesn't tend to happen too often tbh because it confuses people.

Its confused me bigtime. I cant get my head around it. I'm very worried that there could be a growth problem. No they didn't do no measurements. I have had a water infection could that have caused any problems do u think? Xx

A water infection shouldn't have effected your scan.

Can you call them on Monday and just ask for some elaboration? I would. I'd probably assume that the sonographer was referring to 5 weeks + since conception to be honest, which would make you 7 weeks + using the UK dating method. That's much more in line with your dates and your positive test and the fact they found a heart beat. I wouldn't worry yourself at all at this stage about a growth problem. The gestational age in very early pregnancy tends to be determined by what they can see and progression rather than size IYSWIM.

4 weeks is normally just a sac, 5 weeks is maybe a larger sac with a dot in, 6 weeks a heartbeat may be detected, at 7 weeks a heartbeat should definitely be detected and should be able to measure between 9 - 10 mm in crown to rump length.

This is what I know from my experience of early internal scans, I had two myself one at 5 weeks and one at 7 weeks. I also went to my friend's who had two, one at 4 weeks and one at 6 weeks. All at the same hospital, all internal.

I'd definitely follow up and tell them you're concerned. I don't know why you went for the emergency scan but I'd guess that they were happy to see a pregnancy in the right place ie not eptopic, and with a heartbeat and perhaps overlooked talking you through things thoroughly.

Thanks u have helped my mind to rest a little. I will phone them monday. I must be 7+ weeks like your saying coz that works out a lot better than being just 5+ weeks. The woman that scanned me said everything looks normal right size and shape so its just the dates that's worryin me which I know is silly wen everything else is ok xx

OP posts:

It's not silly at all it's completely understandable. I'm glad your mind is at rest a bit, hope they are able to explain themselves better tomorrow, they should have some notes on file to refer to.

Please update us with how it goes, best of luck. X
