Can anyone help me make sense of my dates? (need a sensible head and a fresh pair of eyes)

I thought I was 7 weeks pregnant but an early scan indicated that I am roughly 5 1/2 weeks - a sac and yolk were seen but no heartbeat. I now have to wait a fortnight for a follow up scan. Concerned that the embryo is not developing as it should and I am heading for a mc. This is my first 'natural' pregnancy, I have one DS who was conceived using IVF who is 8 month old.

Here are my dates, if anyone can tell me whether they look right or wrong for 5 weeks I would be very grateful:

I have only had 2 periods since my DS was born

1st was Sep 11th
2nd was roughly 20th Oct (a 39 day cycle?!?)
I got a positive test on 25th Nov (36 days after prev period) it was one of those clear blue digitals which dated me at 1-2 weeks since conception (3-4 weeks pregnant according to the leaflet)
I took a second test the week after (1st dec) which dated me at 2-3 weeks (4-5 weeks pregnant)
My scan was yesterday which dated me at roughly 5 1/2 weeks

...is there any way this could be possible according to the dates I have given? I am too confused!

I calculate this as being entirely possible.

If you got a positive test on the 25th and it showed 1-2 weeks and you were only 10dpo at that point, that means ovulation on the 15th November.

Add on the obligatory 2 weeks for dating purposes and that means your LMP would have been the 1st November if you were having a 28 day cycle which you clearly were not. That would make you 5 weeks and 2 days today. And your scan indicates that you are in fact a few days ahead of that and perhaps ovulated around the 17th or 18th November.

So, in answer to your question, it is still possible that your pregnancy is viable and your last period is not an accurate date. Perhaps try another clearblue at the weekend and see if it goes up to 3+. Have you got another scan booked to check for progress?

Yes I think it looks right too specially with your long cycles when you had 1-2 you were probably only just pregnant and then if 4 weeks on the next one would make you around 5 1/2. Congratulations hope everything settles for you x

Sorry, I'm counting backwards! Your scan indicates that you probably ovulated around the 12th or 13th November.

Hi Kat, thanks for trying to help me make some sense of this. What you say sounds logical but I'm confused in terms of my last period - it was roughly around the 20th Oct, so for me to have ovulated on the 15th (26 days into my cycle) - is that even possible? 17th or 18th would be 28/29 days into my cycle.

Sorry for being so useless - it was all so much more straightforward when the lab did everything for me Wink Hoping things can still be ok.

by the sounds of it you are only just getting your cycle back anyway so a long cycle is not that unusual while things are just settling down. The main thing is at the moment that the scan results tally up with the results from the clearblue tests. Obviously that doesn't guarantee anything but it is reassuring. If you had got a bfp a week earlier than you did, then that would be more of a cause for concern. Hopefully you can have another scan in a week or two and that will give you your answers.

I was put back a week at my 12 week scan which baffled me, because it meant I must have ovulated right before my period was due- when all the signs were it would have been much earlier... Still not quite sure if they're right, but anyway, I'm '25' weeks now and everything else seems fine, so I'd try not to worry. X

My scan is on 21st so should know either way then - will be a bit of a rubbish Christmas if bad news though Xmas Sad

My scan showed a sac with yolk which the nurse said you can usually see at 5 1/2 weeks, heartbeat I understand should be visible from roughly 6 weeks so I'll be willing that little bean to flicker into life tomorrow.

Ooh a yolk is excellent though. No baby = no yolk, the fact that there is a yolk sac means that there is an embryo even if you can't see it yet. It does at least rule out the possibility of blighted ovum where nothing ever develops in the sac.
Fingers crossed for your little bean!

Just wanted to bump to report that I had my second scan today and saw little bean (7 week 4 days) with a nice strong heartbeat! Seems my dates too add up after all. Xmas Grin Baby is due at the beginning of Aug!!
