Have 2 DD's, mw says 75% chance of this baby also being a girl??

So I had my 34 week mw appointment today, and the midwife asked if i knew what i was having and i said no. He then said well as you have two girls you have a 75% chance of another girl... ?? I have never heard this before? Surely it's still 50:50? It's bizarre though, I have always felt that I didnt have a preference over what gender this one was, but I was actually a bit disheartened after hearing that. We didnt want another baby to have a boy, whatever it is we will be thrilled to bits as long as it's healthy and happy! I was just really shocked by my emotions. To be fair I am extremely tired, full of cold, and didn't like the mw at all so maybe that had more to do with it...!

bollocks.

thebigkahuna · 05/12/2011 17:28

bollocks.

Your chance every time is 49% girl, 51% boy.

(although some number crunching does suggest that if you've already had two girls then you are slightly more likely to have a girl third time round, but it's pretty close to 50/50.

ShowOfHands · 05/12/2011 17:29

"Although we often hear the "statistic" that you are 30% or even 70% more likely to keep having the same gender, this is just an old wives tale. It is NOT a fact. The truth is, your odds stay pretty close to 50% for each child and only vary slightly. If you have had 2 or 3 boys, you are only about 2% to 6% more likely to have another boy. If you have had girls, you are slightly more likely to have a boy next."

See here.

You're marginally more likely to have another girl after two dds to the tune of about 2% but largely your odds remain around 50/50.

I don't know how true this is but I've heard if you have a third child with the same partner, and the first two are the same sex it changes on the third???

Would be interestedto hear from
anyone this has happened too x

I had 2 girls then a boy, all same father. Each around 2 years apart. My OB said that it was 50:50 chance until you had had 4 of one sex, then it was less likely for you to have the opposite sex. Currently 37.5 weeks with no. 4 and we don't know the sex of "it"

MiauMau · 05/12/2011 21:34

utter bollocks! I'm the eldest of three (on my mum's side), with another girl after me and then the last one is a big mummy's boy :)

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 05/12/2011 21:51

This is just another example of why I never listen to midwives Wink

imip · 07/12/2011 13:22

4dds and dc5 (currently 31 weeks) appears to be a boy. I've asked many cons about this and they always say 50/50. I posted a thread about this in Larger Families about having more than four of one gender in a row, a very interesting read! Oh, same father for all of them. This is it for me though and I think I will be sterilised. Johnny Depp, you've missed your chance for me to mother your children!

DiscoDaisy · 07/12/2011 13:23

3DDs followed by 2DSs all with the same partner.

Listzilla · 07/12/2011 13:44

Bollocks (it's definitely 50% likely to have them!).

NormanTebbit · 07/12/2011 14:12

What big kahuna said

NormanTebbit · 07/12/2011 14:12

I have three girls - it's great (at the moment)

HappyHippyChick · 07/12/2011 14:15

I have three boys (with the same partner) with dc4 on the way in 6 weeks, so will see then!

notnowbernard · 07/12/2011 14:21

2 dds then ds (same partner)

olittletownof · 07/12/2011 15:15

I'm a DD with two DSs before me. Personally I think there's something lovely about having three girls, perhaps that's what having two big brothers does to you Smile
