Sorry to the squeamish amongst you, or those of you who could never have imagined such a horrible thing...had vulval varicose veins in my 2nd pregnancy but can't remember when. Am 22 weeks Tom & have them ALREADY!! V uncomfortable if am on my feet for any length of time & the constant throbbing v uncomfortable. Any tips a'one? Ive gone from 7st 11pm to 8st 11 already & my bump is rather huge, so wondering if I try to control my voracious appetite will the pressure ease somewhat???

err, doubt it. This is my second pg, I didn't have them in my first but am having twins this time and have had them from 16 weeks this time Sad. I'm 20+2 today, and have gone from 8st5 to 8st 13 (I lost loads in my first trimester) so not sure it's even the weight...

I asked at my consultant appointment last Thursday, and they said its the extra blood volume in pg and the bump weight. There's nothing you can do, and hopefully they'll go once baby born. I optimistically asked if a support belt would help by taking some bump weight off, but the answer was almost definitely not. For me I think it's partly the even more massive increase in blood volume of twin pregnancy but the reason why doesn't help the pain...!

Most annoyingly its not something you can have a RL whinge about really, and I'm a bit horrified really!!!!

Aww, I really do sympathise. As you say; it's not one of the things you can have a moan to your colleagues about!! I'm a Nurse & I know thus is the start of some really achey days at work, but I'll just have to keep my chin up! Did mention it to my mum (Veteran of 7 pregnancies, 5 miscarriages) & shd never had them but suggested a belt support type thing so it's good to know it won't work. Incidentally, my sister had twins & it didn't happen her, and with my last pg, I measured 'small for dates' from 27 weeks on but had these veins plus bi-lateral inguinal hernias. All sorted themselves out after delivery & didn't interfere with my 2 hour labour, so don't worry about that aspect of things. I had been reassured this would be the case & it was. Good luck with your twins!!!

Sorry for anyone having to deal with this. I had them toward the end in my first pregnancy but not too bad, this time a hundred times worse and starting at 14 weeks.
Now i'm 38 weeks and they have just taken another turn for the worse. They are far worse on my right side and have just become this massive bulging tangle. They have just gotten so bad there is some sort of chafing going on too.
For this and other reasons I've been booked for a c section in 10 days.
My consultant said try putting a pad in the freezer and then applying, sounds a bit useless to me so I haven't tried. Now just praying i'm not permanently disfigured!
I don't think you can do much as far as weight gain, my bump is pretty small.

dreamfeeder · 04/12/2011 13:52

Yes, I think if it were purely weight a belt might help, but the doctor told me it was more the increased blood volume of pregnancy and there's clearly nothing to be done about that!!!

If I'm resting it doesn't feel too bad anyway so doubt I'll try freezer pad. Not much rest to be had with a 14 month old mind and I'm a paeds physio so active job like you benzer

They are bloody hideous, aren't they? I can't believe how hugely prominent they grow Sad and how uncomfy it is when the bump rests on them.
The only relief I have found is to spend as much time as possible with my feet up. And swearing. Swearing helps too.

I remember that I had them with first preg, but dont remember them bothering me at all...

Noticed that they are back yesterday (22w with #2) while attempting to shave (TMI? Grin) and they are awful. Last time there was just a little swelling, this time I can see veins!!! It is uncomfortable all day every day, worse if I stand up too long though. :(

Cant be my weight, I am slightly overweight anyway, but havent put on any more weight in pregnancy yet
