Weight loss

Has anyone else had this? Before I got pregnant I was already very big so weight loss wont really affect me myself but I am worried about the baby. I havent had any illness really a little nausea etc but at 18 weeks I have lost about 1stone on my pre-pregnancy weight. Couple this with the fact that in general I should have put on about 10-15lbs I am obviously a little concerned. I put it down to the fact that my pre-pregnancy weight was in the main caused by PCOS and obviously pregnancy has alleviated that little problem. I eat three meals a day eg breakfast readybrek (made with milk), Lunch Sandwich and fruit and dinner normally cottage pie and veg or a similar type thing. I don't over indulge on puddings I only really have one on a Sunday and to be honest I can't be bothered to get the car out to fetch chocolate etc. (We live in the sticks so can't walk).

So what do you think am I OK or should I mention to midwife when I go?

Hi OP

You are probably OK but wouldn't hurt to mention it to your midwife next time. Have they been weighing you at each appointment? I am also big (BMI 31) and midwife only weighed me at the first two appointments, and I'm now nearly 32 weeks.

Sounds like you are eating a sensible, healthy diet so the baby should be getting what it needs. Hopefully your 20 week scan will reassure you that the baby is growing fine Smile

I lost weight at the very beginning as I lost my appetite and felt nauseous towards the end of the day. By 19 weeks I was starting to feel fine until a few weeks ago (week 32) when the loss of appetite returned.
At my MW appointment on Weds (35 weeks) I had apparently only put on 4kg but MW said as long as baby is growing, it's fine.
I too was classed as 'obese' having a bmi of 31 and height of 5ft 3ins. People were always shocked (as was MW) as I look a lot slimmer than what the scales say.

Hey OP. Generally if you're in a high BMI group they worry a lot less about weightloss. I was a 27.6 or something and have so far not gained at any point and if anything have been a couple of pounds down on pr-pg, and am still about 2.5lb down at 3errr3wks. (and very, very tired). MW said they'd only worry about weightloss if:

  1. My diet was poor
  2. I had a low BMI
  3. My urine dips showed high ketones (a sign youy're relying too much on burning your body fat rather than food)
  4. I showed signs of anemia or other signs of generally not getting enough nutrition
  5. LO started to measure small

Generally babies will steal everything they need to your detriment.

Talk to you MW about it, but you seem to be eating healthily, thought I grazed a bit more than you throughout the day (fruit mainly) so don't be surprised if they just dismiss it! You might want to add a snack in in the mornings (fruit, whatever), just to boost evergy levels if you're getting tired, but, well, up to you really. There really is no reason to eat more during pregnancy. It's quality not quantity.

My appetite is ZERO and has been since day1 really, I also rarely get hungry, so don't rely on those to be an indicator of need either. I've kept my pregnacare plus going throughout pregnancy as I'm a little paranoid about the weightloss, so that gives me some mental comfort, but not much.

Also, expect some tactless sod to tell you how massive you are now pregnant, they just can't help themselves. I can even have a conversation with somoene about being worried about weightloss one day and them then say how huge I am the next...odd people!

Oh and if you've signed up to anything like Boots parent club expect to find the "you're now ??wks and will have put of about ??lb in weight" unbelievably paranoia making and frustrating.
