No Midwife appointment til 14 wks - feel a bit let down

Just a moan really as there is nothing I can do! I have a booking appt and scan when I will be 14 wks but nothing before then. Tried to make a MW appt today and they don't have the resources! No-one is being seen til booking at 13-15 wks!

I'm in Glasgow and I guess they're just so short staffed, no nuchal fold test here and they've only just brought in 20 wk scans since I had DD 2 years ago. All bloods done at booking.

Just feel a bit let down by the postcode lottery.

Hiya, I'm in Glasgow too and was exactly the same was 13+6 by the time i seen midwife and got my scan, I've got 3 pg friends as well who are all in the same boat it seems to be standard to do it at 14 weeks as everyone of us got it within a few days of the 14 mark. On the upside the scan pics are better than 12 weeks as the babys that much bigger :)

What hospital are you going to?

TeuchterInTheCity · 28/11/2011 16:01

Yes that's true! Just seems an awful long wait.

Going to the Southern but thinking of having the baby at the RAH if I can go to their midwife led unit. Postnatal care at the Southern isn't great cos they're so busy.

I cannot comprehend how your government can justify not offering nuchal tests due to lack of resources but free prescriptions for everyone irrespective of income. Madness or very sexist priorities?

Thing is though, what is the MW going to do?

Here we have a very good (I think) service, all routine MW appointments, scans come through on time, all the tests if we want them, good choice of places to give birth. But still this pregnancy it was booking in, dating scan then nothing until about 17 weeks I think I was which was just a quick hello to review my bloods and verify that they were ordering my anti-d. They don't listen to the heartbeat that early, they don't measure, you don't need anything unless you feel that there is a problem in which case it is the hospital you ring not the MW. I then had scan at 20 weeks and a review with MW at 25 where she listened in to the heart and measured for the first time.

i'm sure i just had a booking in appointment then a scan, nothing else till 16 weeks with all 3 of my babies in a good area.

i was offered a nuchal fold test though, i thought that had to be offered?!

My friend is booked in at the Southern and her scan pics are brilliant compaired to mine at the royal, I've heard they have better machines at the Southern, my friend that is going there was reluctant to go as she had her DS at the royal and wanted to go back there but with a wee one and living next to southern she decided she would and says they have been good so far, she had problems while having her DS and the people at the royal never really explained what happened but her midwife at the southern req her notes gave her an appointment to come back the next week and explained it all to her, she's had both her scans now and is quite happy with going to the southern.

I know it seems ages away i'm 31 +5 and have only seen the midwife 4 times so far! Your booking in app and scan will take forever btw between 1.5 hours to 2 hours.

That's it, I've got to stop complaining about London hospitals. (Sorry, I'm Glaswegian living in London, not randomly stepping in to have a go at Scottish hospitals! I was born in the Vale of Leven...)

Go private? I got the nuchal scan done privately (wanted to avoid NHS booking in deadline hassles, also having twins so wanted to go to a specialist clinic) - it cost about £150.

you could get a private scan. It costs about £100 I did with DD as nuchal not offered on NHS where I lioved. I had a scan at about 8 weeks for reassurance (I vomited so much I was convinced it was twins) then nuchal at 11 and a bit then NHS scan at 13 weeks. This time I'm having another private scan at about 9 weeks and then will have NHS nuchal scan as they offere them where I now live. I also know so many people who've had missed miscarriages I just wanted to be sure things were OK at 9 weeks (and then I'll get another scan anyway)
