Can anyone tell me how early they can see things on an internal scan? I am 7wks today and tomorrow, am going for an internal scan, following some brown discharge and a bit of pain. If my bean is still there, what will they see at this stage?
I'm trying to stay positive as i still have the 'most-of-the-day' nausea and huge heavy boos but I'm starting to wobble a bit!

i had a scan where they dated me at 6 weeks. i got a picture too! of a little sac! lol

you can't see much, but they should be able to see the sac with something in it, and possible a little flicker which is the heartbeat (can't always see it that early though i don't think)

It depends on whether you are spot on with your dates or not - a week or so out can make a difference. At about five or six weeks you would see a yolk sac, after six weeks you would see a fetal pole, and you would expect to see a heartbeat between six and eight weeks. If they don't see a heartbeat tomorrow they may ask you come back in a week or so for a further scan to see if they baby has a heartbeat.

btw you should have an empty bladder for the internal scan.

why are you having an internal scan rather than a normal one though?

Mud · 05/01/2006 19:28

6 weeks. brown blood is old blood so try not to worry. even red blood is not a problem in most cases

I think my dates are right -I used opks and did my BBT (just realised, this sounds very over-the-top!)
thanks for the bladder tip!
ps - what's a fetal pole?

I saw a heartbeat at six weeks and a little prawn-like thing at 7 weeks.

compo - internal scans show up to a week more development of the baby, so are more useful than abdo scans at such an early stage.

My doctor told me it would probably be an internal one. I assumed this was because they wouldnt see anything with a normal one yet.
might I get a normal one do you think?

no will be internal

starlover · 05/01/2006 19:33

definitely internal. they told me that a normal one wouldn't pick anything up cos the sac is so tiny

olivo · 06/01/2006 12:45

thanks everyone -I went today and my bean is still there - cried when I saw its heartbeat! they've put me a couple of days back but so relieved.

So glad everything was OK. I had a normal scan at 7 weeks for much the same reason as me - but there were able to see a heartbeat too! It's great once you have the reassurance that everything is OK.
