Hi, I have been suffering with really bad Nausea and Vomiting from 5.5 to 12 weeks. It has been so much worse this time around, so much so that I have been signed off work for the last 4 weeks and spend most of my time lying down. With my first pregnancy, it was nowhere near as bad (just nausea, and was still able to function relatively normally) and tailed off at around 12 weeks. This time it's not showing any sign of going away at 12 weeks and I just wondered what your experience was?
For anyone in a similar boat, I have found the Hyperemesis support thread incredibly helpful - the lovely ladies there have helped me stay sane, especially on days when nothing stays down!

TIA.

Near enough the same for me, up to 15 weeks with both DSs (preg with #2 atm) Was sick again then with DS1 in the second half of the third trimester. Have had a few more off days with DS2 (including today :(), but I'm sure that running round after a toddler probably doesnt help!

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 24/11/2011 18:46

DH did say to me "you werent this bad with DS1" the other day. Umm yes I was!! I was just in work so you rarely saw it!! Angry

Thanks Beyond that's good to know. Best wishes with the rest of your pregnancy - how many weeks are you now?

Mine went on longer - with my first I was craving steak by 14 weeks Hmm. This time it has never completely gone, I am still having days where I feel off and I am 34 weeks. It took till about 18 weeks to feel reasonable. Hope you feel better soon it really is awful.

needinstructions · 25/11/2011 09:32

Sorry but mine went on longer in my second pregnancy. I had sickness til about 17 weeks with the first and about 24 weeks with my second. Now pregnant again and terrified it'll never end...

I have got pills from the doctor (prochlorperazine) which seem to help a little bit but I'm still sick every morning and night.

Every sympathy to everyone suffering. It is unimaginably miserable.

i had a not bad second trimester and then it kicked off again in the third (fun times) but actually this has been my best pregnancy to date. hate to say it but with my first too i was sick the whole way threw. could go more than a couple of meters from the house for 9 months was not a good time for me.

smk84 · 25/11/2011 16:26

Thanks for your comments everyone. Brett and NeedInstructions I am pleased to hear it didn't take over your lives for the whole nine months. Samwellsbutt I am dreading it lasting the whole nine months, as you say Need it is absolutely unimaginably miserable ! Hugs to you all. At least we have mumsnet ! Need I have heard that sometimes takes a while to find the right meds, and that some people need a combination (bet you know this as it's your 3rd time, but there's some great info on the hyperemesis support thread).
It would just be so nice to know when it would end !!!!!

Well, I'm going to buck the trend by saying I only had a single queasy moment in my second pregnancy - compared to the first where I LOST two stone whilst pregnant because I felt so nauseous the whole way through.

Then I had a fairly 'normal' feeling sick from 7-14 weeks.

This time, the nausea mostly wore off by 12-13 weeks but has been replaced by food aversion/lack of appetite.

I think, what I'm saying in a long winded way is I don't think there is necessarily any rhyme or reason as to whether you'll be worse, or better, the second time. You could torture yourself with thoughts of it lasting for weeks and weeks more because other people have found that the case with their second pregnancies, but similarly, you could be just around the corner from feeling a whole lot better.

You've found the support thread already which is great (really, as grim as it all gets, the 'I'm not alone' thing is crucial, and so many helpful tips) so all you can do is try and get as much rest as you can (isn't it, anecdotally at least, accepted nausea/sickness tends to be worse when tired? Perhaps that's why it seems worse the 2nd time - running around after a toddler too can only exaccerbate things!) and plod on.

My fingers are crossed you do start to feel better soon!

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 26/11/2011 14:19

I'm 21 weeks now smk
Not feeling sick now (finally, yay) but my appetite is absolutely shit. I think I actually want food less than when I was sick! I'm yet to put on a single pound...

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 26/11/2011 14:21

Just noticed that Manda has lost her appetite too! How far along are you?

MandaHugNKiss · 26/11/2011 15:23

15+3, beyond. Glad to not feel so sick anymore but just wish I wanted to eat!

Broodzilla · 27/11/2011 10:21

I'm with Manda... DC1, the nausea started pretty much at 4 weeks. It was constant and the sort where I sometimes felt that opening my mouth to speak was enough to make me gag. Think the last time I was actually sick was at 28 weeks. It was my biggest worry when we started TTC again: there was no way I could've coped with looking after a toddler in that state. Amazingly, this time around, I've had very little nausea (mostly feeling a bit hungover) and only struggled with certain smells (Dove soap and DS's nappies :D ) and it wore off by about 16wks (at 31wks, poopy nappies are fine but still can't stomach Dove...) so all in all, totally different.

Maybe it's because I was bfing until about 20weeks (would've carried on but my milk dried up... Have heard bfing tends to reduce nausea in pregnancy) or maybe it's because this one is a girl... Or maybe it's just one of those things. Either way, there really doesn't seem to be any way of predicting these things. Hang in there. you certainly have my symphaties!

NinkyNonker · 27/11/2011 12:43

I didn't have it at all with DD, bit felt crap till about 14 weeks with this one! I even threw up a few times, just felt intensely car sick/hungover the rest of the time.

smk84 · 27/11/2011 14:47

Thanks everyone, until this happened to me I had no idea that so many people suffered for so long ! Almost everyone I know has only had it mild, even my friends carrying twins. Thank you for all the encouragement :)
