pregnancy weight gain

Hello,

I'm 11 weeks pregnant and have already put on 4kgs, I worried I'm putting on too much weight to quickly. If normal weight gain is 10 to 12.5kg and and that the last trimester is when most of the weight comes on.
I obviously don't want to diet, but would like to know what a healthy weight gain should be.

Can anyone advice?

relax, dont stuff your face eat but when your hungry. early weight gain can often be water retention. try not to fixate you can spend you whole life losing weight putting on a little for your baby is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

sorry that prob isnt really that helpful.

I gained 4 stone with my first pregnancy and almost four with the second. I subsequently lost the weight with no real effort and am back to pre-preg weight. I believe there is a great deal of variance from woman to woman. I seem programmed to gain a lot, but it comes back off over the next year or two.

Don't get too obsessed, hard I know. Just do what you need to do to be as healthy as you can manage.

Good luck.

Thanks, you're right.
I've just met a friend for breakfast who commented on my weight gain, as I only saw him a few days ago I was a bit thrown that he would be so shocked.
I've been very hungry this last couple of weeks and just can't seem to put the fork down!!

I agree with verylittle, I too put on nearly 4 stone with my first pregnancy and lost it all without any real effort after 1.5 years. Were you small to begin with? If you're small and slim, you're going to put on more weight than average. I would just enjoy it, I love the way my wrinkles disappear when I'm getting big and fat :-)

I love my very obviously pregnant shape at 22+3, but worry that having put on a stone and five pounds already is too much... Plus I feel very superficial for minding about it.

Well, I'm 23 weeks and have already put on 1st 2lb (or 7kg) so Hardcheese you are in good company, it seems pretty much par for the course Grin

Weirdly I don't think I look that much fatter apart from the bump, so I do wonder if it's mostly baby, fluid and blood volume. At the moment I am really hungry all the time esp. for protein (and not just 'oooh I fancy some cheese' but, 'OMG if I do not get some more nutrition right now I'm going to faint'), so pretty sure it's not just me being greedy!

Sweetlucy I seemed to put on a lot in the first trimester too, only for the weight gain to really slow down at the start of the second, before ramping up again in the last week or so. I found that much of my first trimester 'fat' was actually water retention, which then slowly got exchanged for 'real' weight gain. My DH reckons I look slimmer now at 23 weeks than I did at 13 weeks, he could just be being kind, but I agree with him - I did look bloated before whereas now it's mostly focused on the bump (OK, and my arse IS clearly a bit bigger but baby does need some fat stores!).

So relax. One of my best mates put on four stone during pregnancy, her baby is now four months old and I am not kidding, she has lost it all already without doing anything at all (she says she has breastfeeding to thank...).

MarathonMama · 03/12/2011 15:05

Oooh ladies, I'm 25 weeks and have put on nearly two stone! Glad I'm in good company, it's mostly bump (with a few chins thrown in for good measure...)

Four pregnancies so far, on the fifth. All three full-term pregnancies I put on three stone, and am almost there again at 30 weeks. I lose it all and my full-term pregnancies have been 35 years plus. It takes 10 months to a year and I do breastfeed all that time. Different shape though, sadly...much different shape!!!
