Booking In - When did you do it?

I am trying to get an idea of when people call the midwife / visit the GP for the first time...

I'm only 4+4 so very early days at the moment I know! I am quite anxious about it all and just wondered at what stage people have made that first contact with the 'system'. I know everyone would be different... it is mainly out of interest!

Hi Oggy and congratulations on your pg Smile.

You're right that it seems to be different for everyone. Round here, we don't need to see a gp to be referred to the mw or anything, so I just rang my gp surgery to make an appt with the mw for when I would be 8 weeks. That was my booking in appt and then from there she booked my 12 week scan for me.

I've heard of other people on here though that do the booking in at the same time as the 12 week scan, or who have to see the go first and be referred to the mw.

I would suggest phoning your doctors' surgery and asking them what the procedure is in your area. It may be that if you need the gp to refer you, you'll need to see them in the next week or two?

Hope that helps. Good luck Smile

See the GP, not 'go' Blush

I went to the doctor at just before six weeks, didn't see the gp though, asked the receptionist to make me appointment with midwife. Got a call from midwife the next day and had my booking in a couple of days before I was 9 weeks. This seems to be the fairly standard procedure but it doesn't happen everywhere of course.

My GP wouldn't even see me til I was 6 weeks. But in the time I was waiting for that appt, I self-referred over the phone (when I was 4 weeks and a bit - did it early bevause that hospital is v popular and Im not in their immediate catchment are) to my local maternity hospital. They ended up sending me my booking in appt through the post before my GP appt, so I just cancelled that and have never actually seem my GP about being pregnant. Congratulations!

Where I live appears different. I saw gp when I found out (4 wks n a bit ish) and gp did referral to midwife and they sent me an appt through the post for 9 wks ish

Thanks for your replies ladies :)

I have looked up my two local hospitals but because they are in different trusts, they have different procedures. One of them you need to see the GP, the other has a phone number to call the midwife direct. I think I will make some calls when I am around 6 weeks and hope for the best!

Rang surgery at about 5 weeks to arrange booking in visit with the MW, around here the MW apparently won't see you until you're at least 10 weeks so I'll be finally seeing her next week at 10+3.

Flisspaps · 23/11/2011 16:10

I rang at about 6 weeks this time round and booked in at about 10 weeks. Didn't bother ringing the GP as they just fill in a form and send it off to the MW, so I gave the MW the same details over the phone.

Last time I didn't book in until nearly 14 weeks.

mrsg2011 · 23/11/2011 19:50

I went to Gp this week and was told to arrange booking in appointment with MW for around 8 weeks. Went to recpetion and was told the GP "doesn't know how things work around here"! Have been told to do urine test when I'm 8 weeks because "things might go wrong before then". Only when test comes back positive can I make an appointment with MW. Was hoping to at least have appointment booked so I can fit it around work (can't ask for time off without explaining I'm pg and don't want them to know yet)! I'm currently 6 weeks.....getting impatient!

I guess things are different depending on your area!

Was about 7-8 weeks this time - I saw the GP round 5 weeks because the GP receptionist said I needed to, though the GP pointed out that yes, I could self-refer to the MWs at the same hospital.

With ds I saw GP and then had scan to confirm was 14+5, immediately booked booking appt and couldn't get one until I was 21 weeks - just as well I didn't want the 12-week blood tests!
