Is it bad?

I always sleep on my left side which I know is recommended, I still live with my parents so I spend most of my night in my room - sound like a bratty teenager I'm actually 26 lol

I usually lieon my back with my head on pillows watchin the tele, I only started feeling movements yesterday and I've had more tonight that during the day, could this just be the baby's pattern or will I be making it uncomfortable for it by lying only back, do you think I should sit up?'

It's not BAD per se, but SLEEPING on your side (any side but yes preferably the left), will maximise blood flow to the baby. I don't know how far on you are-there is an interesting article here, that you can draw your own conclusions about.

Lying watching telly, well you are human! As you go on you will be delighted to get any position to sit in that's comfy. Now you mention it I felt my first movements lying with my feet up watching the telly too!

Lying on your back can reduce blood flow to the uterus and the baby in pregnancy once the uterus gets too big - not sure how far along pregnancy is when this becomes a problem though.

Before you run out and panic after reading that Grauniad article, here's a good very balanced look at the study behind the article. Again, so you can draw your own conclusions.

My MW rolled her eyes when I asked about sleeping position, but then she seems to roll her eyes about just about everything...

If you lie flat on your back with a BIG bump (so really not going to make any difference early on, but does towards term) then the weight of the baby can squash the big vein in your abdomen against your spine. If blood doesn't get back to your heart fast enough you'll theoretically run into trouble. Because the vein is on the right of the artery lying on your left keeps it even safer. But either side will do, or on your back tilted a bit to the left.
