How soon after waters breaking did your labour start?

My waters broke at 6am this morning. I'm now in hospital for observation as I'm 35+6. MW said that I might go into labour with the next couple of days but it could well still be a couple of weeks. I'm not sure how well I'll cope with gushing everytime I move for the next fortnight!

Just wondering how long others had to wait after their waters went?

About 4 hours (IIRC) with DS1.
About 1 hour with DS2.

They don't continue to gush, once they're gone they're gone. Mine gushed for an hour then stopped, i went for a walk then and was in labour about 5 hours later. Good luck!

In that case they're only partly gone. There was plenty when they went but I keep having a small gush every hour or two. I've completely soaked through 4 pads since 6.30 am.

Ah your baby is probably plugging them a bit, perhaps move around lots now and see if you can get rid of them if it makes you more comfortable then you'll be able to have a walk. I presume they'll be keeping you in because of your dates?

Your body remakes the amniotic fluid. You will continue to gush, annoyingly i suspect.

Most people start contracting within a few hours but some don't. Do lot's of good positioning as it is harder for the baby to get in to a good position without having his bubble of waters to move in.

Hope it happens soon for you! Good luck.

DD1 it was 5 hours from waters breaking to fully dilated.

DD2 it was 2hrs from waters breaking to fully dilated.

Contractions intensified right after waters went both times.

Good luck!

3 Days ended up having intrevenus antibiotics through labour, but everything went well.

Good Luck!

You won't like this but......my waters went at 35+2 and I did not have ds until 36 weeks!! I had to stay in hospital. On the day I had him when they examined me I was 3cm dialated but no contractions so had to go on the awful syntocin drip. Plus side is labour only lasted 3hrs5mins. Good luck!!

CuppaTeaJanice · 21/11/2011 15:25

Both times the contractions started well before my waters broke. With DS they had to be broken for me, when I was already fully dilated, and with DD they broke during the late stage of labour, maybe about an hour before I started pushing.

Just a quick update, DD arrived safe and well at 11:13pm. Thanks everyone

Congratulations sevensevenseven, fab news, glad it didn't go on too long (although I'm sure it felt like it at the time!).

I had DC4 last Fri and 55mins after my waters went I'd pushed DS out!! (All a bit too quick really..if that's possible!!??)
Many congrats on your safe delivery of your baby Daughter seven! :)
