Bleeding in early pregnancy- Is it a bad sign?

Hi,
Im 10+5 weeks pregnant. At 5 weeks I bled a little over a few days and had a scan which showed that things were ok. Then last week I had very painful cramps, another scan showed everything was fine.
But now tonight ive started bleeding again. Its only a small amount and has just stained my knickers and is on the loo paper when I wipe.
I dont what to annoy the hospital again but dont know how much bleeding i should have before I do ring them.
Also why am I bleeding? have anyone else bled but it still led to a healthy pregnancy.
Its so worrying

yes, I bled on and off little amounts for the first 3 months.

Often just like you describe, stains and a little on wiping. Dd is now 5 and the rest of the pregnancy was fine.

If you are worried give the hospital a call, that is what they are there for and you won't be annoying them

Bleeding can be a feature of some pregnancies - but you should always get it checked out.

kbaby, don't worry about "bothering" the hospital, thats what they're there for! I had bleeding and spotting all the way through my last pg. ds3 was born early but perfect. he's s a year old now and a little terror, but otherwise healthy!

kbaby · 03/01/2006 21:49

how much bleeding did you get. Just a little or more.

Early on, it was just spotting, like you were just about to get a period. I have to emphasis that there was no connection between the early bleeding and the bleeding I got later which was due to placenta praevia. Sometimes early bleeding is due to a cervical erosion and nothng to do with the pregnancy itself. Might be worth having it checked out?

Kbaby,
Ditto me. I understand what you mean about needing to know, but feeling like a time waster with the epu.
I am also worried about frying the little thing, by having so many scans.
I am 8 weeks and having my second scan today after a rush of bright blood two days sent me into a tailspin, but then it just stopped. I have been spotting almost everyday with brown discharge for weeks - had one scan at 6+1 weeks which showed a heartbeat and made me relax, but now have to put my mind at rest again about the bright blood. I just have to know.
Could you arrange an early dating scan, as you are very close to the 12 week mark now?
Failing that, just do what you feel comfortable with, have the scan, you will feel so much better afterwards and sod bothering the hospital, sometimes you just have to know.

In my last pregnancy - which was fine - I had some spotting like yours in the first trimester, and again went for 2 scans, so I should be used to it, but I'm not.
When I spoke to the people this week in the hospital, they said that it might just be something that my body does when pregnant - so that might be the case with you.

They came up with some interesting facts - that apparently 25% of successful pregnancies have some bleeding. I never realised it was that high. They also said that after a successful early scan the odds of miscarriage drop significantly.

Good luck.

kbaby, you shouldn't give a jot whether you're annpying the hospital, they're there to help you and if you're worried, go in and asked to be checked over.

I bled with dd at 16 weeks and everything was well and she's now a healthy 14 month old. However, I also bled at 16 weeks with ds and sadly found out I had had a missed miscarriage.

You never can tell, which is why it's important to get it checked for your sanity and welfare.

Keep well and keep us informed x

olivo · 04/01/2006 20:58

Kbaby, I agree with the others - you need to have peace of mind and that's what they are there for at the hospital.
I too am having some problems with pain and bleeding (I'm 7wks tomorrow)and when I went to the doctors, I was really apologetic but she was great and called the hosspital straight away - I have a scan on Friday. She also said to come back if there was anything that was worrying me - I realise I might just be lucky with my doctor!

i hope all goes well for you.x

bubblepop · 04/01/2006 21:22

kbaby, i had bleeding with my 3rd at 13weeks.it was around the time that my period would have been, which they said was quite common.my dd is 18 months now, had a very healthy pregnancy.try not to worry, get yourself checked out again.i definately would'nt bother what anyone at the hospital thought of me if i was in your situation. good luck, hope all goes well for you.

sommer2000 · 04/01/2006 22:37

I bled with both ds and dd intermittently up to 28 weeks. I also advise getting it checked out even though it had happened through out my first pregnancy I still felt happier getting checked. Both we late and entirely normal no cause was ever found in either case

expecting · 05/01/2006 15:25

Demand a vaginal scan if you're worried. I doubt they'll bring your ultrasound scan forward as I don't think they see much until 12/13 weeks. I had bleeding at 5 and 11 weeks much like yours and then went on to have a very healthy ds. I'm now pregnant again (unplanned but we're happy) and have spotting. Went to epu and was scanned but not even a sac was visible. Either I'm earlier than I thought or they said it could be ectopic/likely to miscarry. Bloods taken and have to go back tomorrow for repeat bloods to check if HCG has doubled-sign of normal pregnancy. It is worrying having to wait but at least hopefully I should know by tomorrow. In your case I would strongly advise a scan at epu as research suggests that reassurance scans have a positive effect on pregnancy outcome. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

kbaby · 05/01/2006 21:04

Ive had 3 scans already due to bleeding and cramping, each time everything is ok. I guess my problem is I dont want to keep going to EPU as where would I stop. Ie if I bled this week and had a scan which showed everything was fine and then bled again next week, would I then go for another scan etc etc.. I could end up being scanned fornightly the way its going.
The bleeding stopped by about 9.30pm that night and was very light.
Ive got my dating scan booked for next friday so unless I bleed again ill probably wait for that.
Thanks everyone for all the advice and the support.
Expecting-- I went for my first scan at 5 weeks and they could only find a yolk so they took bloods which showed an increase and then I had another scan at 7 weeks which showed a heartbeat. I hope this reasures you. Good Luck

kbaby thanks for your words of encouragement. Feeling a bit more gloomy now though because HCG only up a little. Have to go back next tuesday for more bloods. They said theres not enough hormone yet for anything to show if they scan & I can't help but feel thats not right for the stage I'm at - now at least 6 weeks. Your scenario sounds much more postive and I'll be thinking of you next friday. Try to relax (hard, I know)til then.

kbaby · 08/01/2006 17:00

im keeping my fingers crossed for you.

It often is a bad sign; it often isn't. I bled for six weeks from 10 weeks. dd is now 11 weeks and beautiful.

Please bother the hospital. Your peace of mind is important.

All the best of luck to you xx

blueshoes · 08/01/2006 19:05

kbaby, I bled through the first trimester from 6 weeks onwards, including a heavy red bleed. But I went on to have a little baby girl.

Had several early scans and they showed a pool of blood had collected between the developing placenta and the womb. The medical term for this is a sub-chorionic haematoma (not sure about spelling). It means that some bleeding occured whilst the placenta was attaching to womb (something like implantation bleed?) only the blood got trapped. The bleeding was because the blood slowly seeped out and was mostly brown. If that is what you have, it is nothing to worry about

fisil · 08/01/2006 19:10

I bled on and off throughout my 1st trimesters with ds1 & ds2. Didn't bleed at all with the mc! With ds1 I didn't go to epu cos I didn't want to be a nuisance. With ds2 I went for a scan even when there was no bleeding cos I knew it wasn't fair on the baby to have me all anxious!

Mirage · 08/01/2006 22:12

I bled during pregnancy with both dd's.With dd1 it was at 8 & 10 wks & like a period for 1 wk each time. With dd2 it was at 10wks again & lasted for a week.I never did find out what caused it,but eacch time it was so heavy that I was convinced it was all over. Both dd's were born fit & well.

Do you know your blood type? If you are Rhesus negative you may need an anti-d jab.

It is horribly worrying & fisil & several others kept me sane when it happened to me.

expecting · 11/01/2006 23:31

kbaby how are you? Hope all goes well with the scan on friday xx

kbaby · 13/01/2006 21:35

Hi all,
I had my 12 week scan today and the baby is doing nicely with a lovely strong heartbeat.

Thanks again to everyone who has reassured me.

Im hoping that I dont get any more bleeding and can look forward to that first kick.

I'm so pleased. Been thinking about you all day. Great news

Gemmitygem · 07/02/2006 09:04

Hi everyone,

I'm panicking as in a similar situation.. can anyone offer any advice?

I'm 4 weeks 3 days, on Sunday I suddenly had a little rush of bright red blood (no pain, no cramps). Like when you first get your period. That was it, then it went brown and turned to spotting the same day. Now I'm still spotting a tiny tiny bit, brown. (sorry, TMI!) No clots or anything.
I still feel very pregnant, but realise I could well have had an early miscarriage and just have the hormones swimming about still.
Am in a real panic! Any reassurance appreciated!

lahdeedah · 10/02/2006 12:08

Hi Gemmitygem - I think in your case it could be implantation bleeding?? so probably all is fine.

BUT if you are at all worried please do contact the hospital. If the spotting continues and you still feel pregnant, INSIST they do a vaginal scan at 6 weeks and monitor you for symptoms of ectopic pregnancy.

I don't mean to worry you but it is so much better to be aware of all possibilities and ensure you receive appropriate treatment if need be!
